TPI Tune up and Edelbrock TES

How long has it taken some of you to do a tune up on your TPI with a TES or some other system style headers? It seems that the headers are going to make it quite intresting to get a socket on the plugs to change. Also I noticed that the inside of my distributor had a little corrosion on the shaft and around the ICM. Would it be better to replace my distributor of just replace the cap, rotor, and ICM? Chevy distributors are fairly inexpensive. Thanks in advance for any tips that you guys have for this.

lol i just did this and i used edlebrock tes headers. they seem to do well but i have not had it out to the track since i put them on. i also had a bad dizzy i would go ahead and replace it mine was old and nasty very corroded and even rusted. when we pulled it it was cracked. i also changed plugs wires cap rotor. ill throw a picture up of what my distributor looked like when i pulled it. the new one was like 100 i would go ahead and get a new one.

Mine looked about the same. I store it in a dry building and only drive it in the summer. Also how long did it take you to do a full tune up? I plan on going to summit tommorow and getting a new distributor and changing the plugs and wires. Thanks for the input.

well it took a while for me b/c i bought the cut to fit wires and it was my first time doing them. i did them over at mw66nova's house. it took me 2 hours i think tops. the plugs were easy the cap and rotor were easy. the distributor was a little bit harder b/c you have to go to number one top dead center and then position the distributor.

also get an offset wrench for the plugs that helped so so much you dont even know.

One of the many reasons why I dont recommend Edelbrock headers, the spark plug access is horrible.

i can get to my spark plugs fairly easy, the driver side is very easy but the passenger side is kinda difficult but no biggie if you get one of those offset wrenches that thing worked wonders.

Thanks for the reply. When refering to the offset wrench, what degree where you using? What it a 45 or 25 degree angle or something else? I have the motor on top dead center and already pulled the distributor. I just can't believe how corroded it is. I'll keep you all posted on the progress.

i dont know what degree it is but i can look tomaro. and if i cant find out what degree ill snap a pic of it so you can see what im talking about. it helped so much doing mine. i knocked out the plugs in less than 10 minutes from the top! most people with edlebrocks said they have to do some from the bottom...

If you don't mind, a picture would really help. I picked up the new distributor today and plan on installing it on Wednesday night along with new wires and plugs. Thanks for your help and I'll wait for your picture. Take care.

What I did with my TES headers was get a regular spark plug socket, cut it in 1/2 (so its about 1.5" long), and drilled out the center. Now I can slip the socket over the plug with the headers there no problem, then use a regular open end wrench to tighten. Can change all the plugs from the top in 10 minutes like you guys. So easy now. I can take a pic of this socket if you guys want. I think you can also buy the same thing on E-bay (but much cheaper to do your own).

On the distributor, I had similar issues on two of them (first my original, then my friends used one). Just buy a new one, I should have done that from the start.

do what he said i did this just yesterday and it worked great removing them b/c the offset wrench will work and it will work well but it is a little bit hard to get it all the way down on the plug. here do this go get a deep well 5/8 socket with the end so you can use an open end wrench to tighten or losten the socket. it is an ordinary socket but you can use the socket wrench or an open end wrench, it worked great i would recommend that over the offset wrench like i said b4. sorry for changing my mind on you man but i really did just take out all the plugs yesterday and the way i just told you worked better than the offset wrench. just a heads up.

Gearwrench also makes those socket sets that have a hole all the way through the socket and ratchet. That really seemed to work well for me. I didn't even think about those until late last night. Changed my plugs, wires and set the distributor and fired it up. It sounds really well, ran out of time tonight to run it down the road. Thanks for all the time and the input.

I used a regular plug socket and extension on a few and a boxed end wrench and the plug socket on the others.6 and 8 you still have to get from under the car though, well I did anyway. It took me about 30 minutes for all 8.
