Distributor Rebuild

I am rebuilding the small distributor with remote coil on my 89 305 ci Camaro. I have removed the rotor and shaft assembly, module, pickup coil @ pickup pole piece leaving only the main body containing the lower and top bushes.
My question is when looking at the main body from above you see the the top bush which presses into a small part of the main body which contains the roll pin that locates the pickup coil assembly. On either side of the roll pin are two small blind holes, one is tee shaped with a curved top and the other is shaped like an inverted L, both holes blend into the outside of the top bush.
These holes were filled with some Brown/orange soft substance which I initally thought was grease but upon inspection was not and remembering these holes are blind cannot be lubrication wells.
Was this substance some form of heat sink or accumulated junk?
See attached picture.

Thank you.

It probably was grease before 20 years of baking. Now it's just gunk.

Thank You.
Would this mean the top bearing is lubricated by oil mist from below?
