Harmonic Damper/Balancer mark question
Quick question for you TPI people who have had their balancer off..
Let's Pretend the crankshaft keyway is considered 12:00.
Where in relation is the TDC marker on the outer ring?
I'd assume it should be 2:00 since thats where 0* is on the timing pointer on the timing chain cover.
I think I may have picked up the wrong balancer from the autoparts store because the TDC mark on the balancer is almost inline with the keyway.. I assume this balancer is for old SBC's and trucks that have the timing pointer at the 12:00 position.
Any help would be great...
Thanks

On our "late-model" Gen I SBCs, the keyway should be at 12 o'clock, with the 0* mark at approx. 2 o'clock. Indeed, sounds like they gave you the wrong balancer.

That being a picture of an orange engine would have the correct mark for a 60's style mark. For a tuned port, the correct mark would be just about straight up since the timing mark indicator would be viewed from the top behind the water pump, wouldn't it?.

Right, the difference between the balancers is still the relative location of the keyway and timing mark.
