No, not entirely ..

Depending on the lift/duration of the cam it can be
operational with the stock prom ..sometimes..

Most of the time, when runnin' a performance after-market
cam.. it needs to be dialed-in if you want peak performance
from your engine, but not all the time ..

When deciding on what cam to run, you kinda wanna consider
what heads your running with it, because the heads play a vital
role on how the cam responds.

What cam do you have in mind? What specs?

Get ready to fork out some $$$
I'm in the process of doing this now.
$280.00 for a roller cam
$75.00 timing chain
$35.00 oil pan gasket
$100.00 new springs
$20.00 new valve seals
I bought new runners, intake, and plenum.
So I ended up sticking over $500.00 more into it for a cam swap.
I went with a TPI friendly cam

Lift: Intake @Cam 301 @Valve 452 All Lifts are based
on zero lash and theoretical rocker arm ratios.
Exhaust @ Cam 310 @Valve 465
Rocker Arm Ratio 1.50
Crane came # 104224

You dont need to do work on the heads if you go with a mild cam. Look at mine. All I did was change the Springs and valve seals. I kept my stock lifters and Spring keepers. All I can say is the cam I have sounds bad ***!!

I'll let you know in a day or so I hope. I had it running, but it wasnt running good. I guess I pinched some wires when I lifted the motor to change the oil pan gasket. So the fuel injectors are messed up. When I had it going it sounded pretty mean......for a 305 I guess, LOL.
