Holy crap...fuel pressure at 58 psi
Had a shop swap my 305 with a 350. I gave them a holly afpr to use for the swap. The timing was ****ty and the rotor was broken when I got it back. Its had some issues with hesitation and dying sometimes when at full stop. Just checked fuel pressure. When I had the key in "on" fuel was at 58 psi. With the engine on, its running the same 58-60psi.
I understand that its supposed to be at 44 psi or thereabouts. Anyway...im having trouble turning the dial on the holly afpr. Any tips?

Jeez...ok dropped the pressure to 44 psi with the engine running. With the key in the on position, the guage reads around 50psi but thats after I ran it and gunned the throttle. I'll recheck in a bit

actually it sounds like it might still be a bit high. You need to adjust the pressure by taking the vacuum line off the regulator and plug the line as to prevent a vacuum leak while the engine is running. then start and idle your engine then you can adjust the pressure Id start at 44 and se how it acts.

Oops! man thanks for that bit of info. I forgot. Ok so I plug the vacuum lines and yes, its still running high at idle. I back down even more to the stock setting of 44psi.
I have a stock ecm with stock injectors now and am trying to get everything back to stock settings and go from there.
I lost the little black cap that goes over the schraeder valve on the fuel line so I have to keep my fp guage on it for now. I cant find it anywhere....must be under the distributor or something. Damn!

you dont really have to keep the gauge on the fitting, there should be a schrader valve in there like in a tire which will keep the fuel in, the only purpose for the cap is to keep dirt out of that fitting. just keep us updated and Ill see what I can do to help.

I think the spring on the schrader valve is worn out. When I took the guage off and started the engine, fuel sprayed out of the valve. So I have making just short trips when I need too with the fuel guage still connected.
I have it set at 44psi currently. The problems I was having are pretty much gone now. Like I said before, the car was having lots of hesitation under load.....feeling very flat around 2000-3000 rpm, but its better now. I stil get some flat spots in acceleration. I might bump up the pressure 2psi tomorrow and see how it goes.
What are the effects of running with pressure as high as I was. Does the ecm retard timing when running too rich like that?
Also I think I may have a faulty tps. I posted here today about it.

no it shouldnt retard the timing with too much fuel. With that high pressure it just sprays alot more fuel when the injector fires than the ECM is expecting so it runs rich and may foul plugs so you might want to pull one or two out and see if they are all black. As far as the fuel coming out of the service port without the gauge hooked up you want to fix that too because that cap isnt meant to seal pressurized fuel and will probably leak.

Your injectors will be running in static mode, i think thats what they call it? Your ECM will try to adjust to the extra fuel, but most likley it will have a hard time make repairs to the A/F mixture. You'll see a lot of hesitation through some or most RPMs, might through a code, O2 sensor will be working hard too..
You'll be fine though just adjust it to specs, i wouldn't go over 49 PSI at WOT.

Just going through things in my head. The timing is correct, the fuel pressure is correct. Still having some flat spots when accelerating. I will check my #1 spark plug in the am to see if its fouled.
I just want to get this thing running right. Never anticipated being left with all this crap after having the engine installed.

Yeah...fixing that valve is my primary goal.
Then I'll check the plugs.
Wont be cool enough until tomorrow am when I can do all this.

well at least i think i just figured out my cooling problems. Just siphoned some coolant from my overflow tank and it looks contaminated, and dirty, with sediment in the bottom of the clear plastic cup i put it in.
The shop i had this work done at is really pissing me off now. I bet they re-used my old coolant.

I would be giving them a call and see what the heck is goin on. I know where I work if we did work like that we wouldnt have any customers coming back for us to work on thier cars.
