intake manifold leaking, easy fix or not?

intake manifold leaking, easy fix or not?

my 305 tpi is leaking antifreeze on the passenger side front of the motor at the intake manifold! is there an easy fix to this other than taking off everything to get to the intake manifold? i think the manual said that i would have to take the distributor out. is there a way around that because it is scaring me out of doing this myself? please give some advice, every bit helps.

Its easy.

I higly recommend the factory manual especially if u are a beginner.

Just pull the distrib out at TDC #1 (set it up before you pull it out) than it wont be an issue going back in. Line up your marks and go (do not turn engine after distrib is out)

Do some searching, lots of good info and follow torque specs and clean the threads out/off, the entire setup is soft aluminum

also, when you have it torn down, check the intake for pitting around the water ports.
there will be some, a little won't hurt you. but if there is too much, then you will either need another intake or get the old one repaired.

seems like someone had posted up some pictures of what to look for. a search may turn it up.

are there some loose bolts? Just might be an easy fix. But it is a pain in the butt. I just swapped my intake out. Its not a quick job. It was my 1st time doing a TPI intake.

Really no need for concern this was one of the first jobs I did on any car other than swap out a battery or alternator.

The dizzy isn't difficult to remove or refit, if you screw the timing up it's easy to reset it, just follow the instructions and you'll be fine.

You've got to removed the TB, plenum, fuel rail, dizzy and alternator (gets in the way) before the manifold will become accessable, fitting new gaskets is obvious and the re-assembly a logical reversal of what you've just done. Just make sure you've got the correct tools and somewhere suitable to work with enough time to do the work without rushing.

Once you've done something like this you'll feel much better about tackling more complicated jobs in the future.

This is all real good advice. TAKE YOUR TIME....if you rush it, that's how you wind up with a motor that doesn't start and you'll wind up spending MORE TIME trying to trouble-shoot it than you would have in the first place.

Also, be careful not to drop anything into the intake ports. A guy I used to work with, who bought a Cobra intake off of me a while back, installed it himself and dropped a nut into the intake port. Banged his valves, piston, and cylinder bore all up before he shut the motor off and realized there was something in it.

Oh yeah, and since nobody else posted this I will, CHANGE YOUR OIL AFTER YOU'RE DONE!!! Verify the car starts first, then immediately shut it down and change it. The antifreeze from the intake will leak down the lifter galley into the oil pan and will wash the oil off of things.

And keep rags and a catch-pan handy. When you crack the seal, there WILL be lots of coolant going everywhere.

mark everything, bolts brackets ect. Maybe in zip lock bags. Makes then alot easier to put back in.
Also if you pull the intake off, watch your oil pressure sending unit on the rear of the block on the drivers side. It stickes right up. A/C...all that has to be dropped too.
