Need help quick, car is dead!

Hi all,

i drove my car to a friends house who also has a trans am, my fans dont work so he was gonna fix them, he traced the fans back to a relay on the firewall, but for some reason the fans wouldnt come on at all, so we cut the wires from that relay and also a relay down where the air filter is, the 2 live wires and the earth wire coming from the fans, now its wired in through the relay at the firewall so it still goes through a fuse but is now controlled by an on off switch on the dash.

Heres where the problem starts
, when ive come to start my car the fuel pump wont engage ! i did test it as per the haynes manual by putting a live wire to pin G, and the fuel pump is working but obviously it just runs forever like that. Also my orange SES doesnt light up when the ignition is turned on either, and i get no codes.

id be most grateful with any info because my car is now parked up outside my friends house and is stuck there until we know whats happened. he thinks possibly something has fused, a relay has gone bad, the ECU has buggered up or there is some more fuses somewhere ???? the only fuses i know of are under the drivers side of the dash.

so basically, everything was working fine when i got there, we have cut a few wires, now my car wont start, arr!

Sure sounds like the GAUGE fuse under the dash. It controls your gauges, some indicator lights (like the SES light) and fuel pump relay.

Check all the fuses, you might have blown more than one.

BTW: why did you cut the wiring and put a switch on the dash? I'm sure it was something simple in the wires, like a bad connection on a relay or something.

re:

Thanks Lou, my mate thought it was the easiest way with them not kicking in at all, because it bypasses everything apart from the fuse, plus its handy to have them on a switch over here in england because the roads arent straight and long and the car heats up quite quickly with the constant stopping and traffic.

i checked all the fuses and not one of them was blown. Ive been speaking to my friend on the phone and hes found out that there is an inline fuse in the harness somewhere for the fuel pump, could it be that ?

There is a 20A fuse right by the battery (at least on my 91 Z28) that powers the fuel pump and fans. It is just a little plastic box (contains only the fuse, so it really is rather small) with two wires (shoud be red and orange).

I'll be online on AIM and Yahoo in about 15 minutes so if you want, you can message me and we can talk about it live.

re:

Hey lou thanks a lot, i found that fuse, it was blown, replaced it and my car fired right up, only my battery voltage is way down and my SES light stays on constantly, i tried to pull the codes but when i put the paperclip into the port and turned the ignition on, the SES light just stays lit up ! it doesnt flash any codes.

i did take my CH/Fans 20a fuse out and used it for under the hood, do you think its coz there is a fuse missing ? it was just to get the car home as i didnt have any spare ones with me.

sorry i didnt get your message last night i was off the net, and the board was down a while ago too.

So which fuse is missing when the SES is on? The gauge fuse? I'm misunderstanding.

fuse

I took the 20a fuse from the CH/Fan slot under the dash and used it for the fuel pump one in the engine bay as i didnt have a spare one on me, i didnt think it sounded too important but obviously it was, at least it got me home.

i put a new fuse back in the gap, then reset the ECU, started the car up and it was fine, battery back to normal and no SES light.

If you hadnt of told me about that fuse in the engine bay i would probably still be stuck so thanks again lou

Ok, the SES light was probably on due to no power to the fuel pump. Yes, the ECM checks.

Glad you got it all solved. It was just a blown fuse, nothing to go to a shop for, am I right?

I won't forget a girl friend of mine .... well, actually she was already a grown woman .... when she got towed to a shop because her car just died on the road one day. I saw the bill with my own eyes .... it was maybe a hundred dollars for diagnosis .... which sounded "out of gas".

Yeah, I wouldn't be able to help you with that over the Internet ... but anything electrical, just ask.
