cam questions for 305

k, ive started to pull my motor
its my first time, no ones helping (but you guys) and im graduating in a few months.

if i get the zz4 cam, right around 500 lift just over (ill put 550 springs in) can i keep the stock heads? cuz a friend can rebuild them for free and regrind my valves, can i keep stock lifters? maybe rockers?

but what about the valve seats? can i put bigger seats and valves? or do i need to machine things (im in no mood for machining)
i dont want to "choke" my cam or motor, because i know its a fairly hot cam

also, what choices do i have for distibuter? i cannot find one anywhere for a t.p.i with the electrical adavance ( i think my original is bunged) and what about the distributer gear? bronze, copper, titanium, mercury WTF.. i just wanna drive it! i thought chevys were easy

Well I dont know alot of the questions but I'll do the best I can.
Yes you can use your stock heads.
Yes - you can use your stock lifters.
Yes - you can use your stock rockers.

If you can get your heads redone for free.....go for it. Can I send you my heads to get redone for free too? LOL!!

Well, do you think that hot of a cam is a good choice? I mean stock heads, intake, runners, exhaust, not to mention your chip for your tune-up. Just a few things to think about.... Maybe I'm too old fashioned. Good luck!!

Im putting an LT1 cam in my 305 (well, its already in)
Ive changed my valve springs, kept my stock lifters, rockers, pushrods, valves, etc.

I have ported my plenum, and base, changed ignition cables, and other little things.

Im praying there is no problems and it will run sunday night.

Cam: .450/.460 lift 202/208@ 50 110sep

I put in a xr258hr cam in on the same heads(LB9)
206/212
.480/.487
110 lsa
Then I put 1.6 roller rockers on, but I had to put on stiffer springs.
It worked really well, too bad I blew the motor before I could put L98 aluminum's on

Yes, the LT1 cam would be a big improvement over your stock cam.

305 cam: lift: .350/.350 Duration 202 / 206 @ 50
LT1 Cam: .450/.460 Duration: 202 / 202 @ 50

If you add in some 1.6 rockers, your at .480/.491

If you choose to add the 1.6 rockers, then yes you should change your valve springs. I am staying with the stock rockers, but i am changing the valve springs because my stock ones have 145k and their due.

Yes, you would need to file down the end stub, no big deal

I am also adding a set of Edelbrock TES headers, ill let you know sunday night how it all turns out.

Hey, if you have someone doing a valve job and are going to cam up, do a bit of porting. It's probably not going to be the end all of mods but at the same time you've got the heads off and if you nick a set it's not a big deal. It's also more a function of time then anything. If he can get the valves back cut, it wasn't in the budget for me otherwise I would have. http://triodes.home.mchsi.com/engine/v8astro4.html

On the distributor a reman is not too expensive, what's wrong with yours? You can replace the pick up and maybe even get the bushings.

If you're running a stock style distributor it has no vacuum or mechanical advance, the ECM controls it. As long as the shaft is tight in side to side play and the gear isn't chewed I wouldn't sweat it personally, new distributor cap, check the reluctor and take the module into auto zone or similar and have em check it. I thought that rebuilds were a little over $100 if you wanna get one anyways.

thanks
Personally dont know much about ignition, i kept my stock distributor, but added an MSD cap and rotor, taylor cable, and iridium plugs. Soon ill add a blaster coil, but i need money for that.

I just bought a brand new set of Comp Cams valve springs today for $75cdn (brand new) The PN is 981-16. Im hoping everything is ok.

Like i said, ill post up sunday night and let you know how it all ends up..or ends
