Relocate or Bypass MAF - Need Help
I am swapping in a 305 TPI from an 89 IROC to replace my TBI motor. Is there a way to bypass or relocate the MAF and how do I do it. I want to put a billet air cleaner on the end of the throttle body. DO I need to move the MAF?
I am not very technical so small words will help. This is my first swap so I am trying to figure things out before the engine arrives. The engine I bought is complete (wiring harness, ecm, linkages) and running in the car.
Thanks.........

Simply put, you cannot bypass the MAF on an 89 system. So forget about the idea of sticking a cone filter on the end of the TB. As for relocation, you can pretty much put it anywhere as long as it is still in the intake tract between the filter and TB.

You don't want to stick one of those stupid little cone air cleaners on the end of your throttle body anyway. That will make your engine suck warm underhood air, reducing your power output. A lot of people use those filters because they either don't know any better, or they have some wacko application where they can't easily route ducting. The MAF is the most critical part of your system. The ONLY way you can get rid of it is to convert to the 90-92 SPeed Density setup, whic uses a MAP instead of MAF. This is an involved project that would involve taking your wiring harness apart and repinning it. Definitely not worth it to run a "cool" looking air filter.

I like the look of the stock Camaro TPI air intake with the dual filters. There isn't much room for anything else unless you move the battery or charcoal canister.-Nick

Battery will be in the trunk area. Moving the canister is not an issue. Do you have any suggestions on a good cold air intake system?

SLP makes a good kit.....but its like $200. I know Summit had a sale on them for $150 in Decemeber, not sure if the sale is still on. One of the vendors on this board has them for $190.
I had some links to cold air pictures from other board members, but the links won't work???? Do search for cold air in the TPI section. You will find a lot of info and pics. -Nick
