Do I need to replace MAF sensor?

I just got a 1987 Iroc-Z with 305TPI and i noticed that the MAF sensor was not hooked up, so i plugged it back in and now it wont run right, It wont take any throttle, then i unhooked it and now runs fine. It has already been replaced once but i think it was several years back, do i need to replace it again??

Sounds like its underreporting the airflow.

Inspect the MAF sensor, remove it and shine a flashlight into it, look to see if the fine wires in the measuring tube are connected with not breaks os loose ends. If you can not see the fine wires clearly, then remove the rear screen, very carefully.

My guess is that when whoever sold it to you knew it had a bad mass air meter and they unplugged it so it would run right but also shouldve had a check engine light on. The trick to those mass airflow sensors is say you are driving and then the mass airflow sensor dies on you, if you unplug it it'll actually run better when unplugged then it did when the bad one was plugged in. It'll be a way to get you home but should be replaced and plugged in.

The exact same thing happened to me when I bought my IROC last June. When I went to pick up the car the seller started it while I was looking at the body and since it started right up and seemed fine I had no reason to be suspicious. However, when I restarted the car I noticed there was no service engine light when I turned the key on and assumed the bulb was burned out. Well there was no bulb in the socket and when I replaced it, What do you know, the serive engine light stayed on constantly and it turned out to be a bad MAF sensor. Lesson learned.

yea, id say they have taken the bulb out of this one too, these car lots do some pretty tricky things to sell a car. At least it isnt something more serious

most of the time when they act like that it needs a new maf sensor but to be sure get the chart to follow for the code u will have. it should be like a 34 or 33. Make sure ur getting the proper voltage at the connector, make sure theres enough tension at the terminals. I usually use a male termiinal that fits into the connector end to see if theres drag. If all thats good or if the maf sensor is running fine at time tap the sensor itself to see if it acts up.
