Argh! Failed smog AGAIN

Sheesh, it's deja vu all over. Just like 2 years ago. Damn thing failed the smog test. Failed on 2 points.
1. - Base timing was too far retarded. Argh, how did that happen? Anyway, after I got back home I reset it to the proper 6 degrees, so this point is fixed.
2. - Hydrocarbons at 15 mph were just a little too high.

Everything else passed. NOX was within limits as was HC at 25 mph.

So, how do I get the HC at 15 mph down a little?

I'm thinking a new O2 sensor, and dump some alcohol in the tank. Ideas? Thanks.

The guy at the smog test station was not at all familiar with thirdgens. He opens the hood and asks me if my LB9 was a 350. Then he tells me that he thinks I swapped in a Vette engine and I'm trying to fool him, he's never seen a TPI 305. Sheesh. Then he pulls out a flashlight and goes over the engine bay with a fine tooth comb trying to find something out of order so he can fail me.

The wrong timing can affect HC emissions. Also, make sure the A.I.R. system is all hooked up and working properly.

its not illegal to swap in a different engine than what was originally there. if all the emissions stuff was there that was on the original engine there is no problem.

too bad you dont live in austin texas, im a state inspector

You can back the timing off some more to get it to pass. I know this is not a fix but you will get your sticker.

he is in Cali, timing must be within 2 degrees of factory specs.

if the timing was right 2 years ago & the balancer hasn't slipped, the reason your timing was slow is wear on the timing chain, it may be getting time for a new chain set.

what are the HC, CO, O2, NOx & CO2 readings? post the actual numbers on each & what the limits are for each.

Drop in a bottle of rubbing alchohol with half of a tank. Run the **** out of it before you get there and keep the engine temps up. Blow the carbon out. Full throttle blasts down the road should do it.

Yup thats the way to go,had a 1992 BMW M5 Touring a couple of years ago and before testing it to the smog, had to wip it really good before the test otherwise it would be a enviromental pig and keeping revs and cat temperature up just before entry to the test.
