TBI TO TPI swap!!

First off, Great site. My questions is, my 91 formula 305 is a TBI. I just bought a COMPLETE TPI set-up , computer, wire harness and everything else. Has anyone ever done this b4? How hard is it( i will have a shop do it) and what were your thoughts on it?

This is my first visit and thread here, be kind my fellow car nuts

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

This really isn't an "Engine Swap" question, so I'll move it to the TPI forum.

For a newb, one of the best features to use is the search function.

Yes, you are doing the right thing going to tpi. Do a search and you can see what others say about this swap and what's involved.

Good luck and let us know how it's going.

I performed this same swap back in November and wish I had done it a long time ago. Any particular reason you don't want to do the swap yourself? Just be sure you get the harness from the same year as your car due to wiring changes made through the years leading up to the '90-'92 speed density cars which were all the same. The Firebird harness will be a tad different from the Camaro with the battery and evap canisters swapping locations one side to the other.

Re: TBI TO TPI swap!!

As long as the harness and ecm came from a 90-92 car it will be fine. The difference would be the Camaro will have the battery and evap canister on the same sides as your TBI setup does. The TPI Firebirds will have them swapped locations. I used a Firebird harness and had to lengthen the wiring for these items since I didn't want to have to redo some recent wiring I had done just before this project. As for the actual TPI just be sure it's from an '87 up car so the intake bolt holes will be the same as 97-up cars have the center two at a different angle than the ends. What year is your setup from?

Re: TBI TO TPI swap!!

I have a question, if you guys don't mind. I've been thinking about doing this swap as well, now there are two different TPI systems ? One with the MAF and the other one ? Do both work for blown applications or would the MAF be better ?

Re: TBI TO TPI swap!!

I'm new to this forum today, I've read alot of posts on here about doing motor swaps, and I finally joined, so i can post stuff as well. I'm rebuilding a 91 RS that origionally had a 3.1 L v6 in it. I'm putting a 305 TPI in the car for now. The wiring harness I have is from an 88 IROC, which I'm sure means it will not work. Does anyone know if I use a harness from a 91 Z-28 305 TPI car, will it plug directly into the dash harness of the V6 so all the gauges etc will work? Any sugestions would be great!

Re: TBI TO TPI swap!!

Contact Angel at TPIParts, he can give you all the details. I'm not certain about the '91 harness working with a V6 car but as for the TBI V8s from 90-92 yes they will work. It was explained to me when I was putting together my own swap that getting an engine harness for the same year TPI car as your TBI car was the best way to ensure that wiring hassles would be kept to a minimum and that 90-92 Speed Density cars all used the same harness with the only differences being in the battery and charcoal/evap canister locations for Firebirds and Camaros. The MAF cars wiring changed in some way each year for whatever reason. You can have a harness converted to work with whatever year car but it adds expense to the project.
As for the supercharger question I can't help you there. I would suspect that the speed density system would be better due to the MAF sensor becoming a restriction in the intake tract after a certain performance level is reached. Again, Angel may be able to help you with that.

Re: TBI TO TPI swap!!

A factory service manual for the cars in question would be my first thought.
