whats the l98 head casting no.?
hey just bought an 87 gta, has a jasper replacement engine in it with about 4000 miles on it, just wondering what number casting the l98 heads were and where that number is located, under the valve covers i know but where abouts. its maf so the car would prob run fine with other heads, but she seems to have no power over 4000 r's, below that if you slam the throttle the thing'll punch you in the small of the back and shoot up to 70 mph, but 70 to 100 its not much faster then my 92 rs l03. havent dealt with jasper before and wondering if they just used generic heads or the correct pieces.

Casting # is 083.
Jasper will use the correct casting, if requested. There may be an upcharge for those as opposed to random "core bin" castings, and core charges might be $$$ if the customer specified them but didn't supply cores. Therefore they (and other rebuilders with similar policies) often end up supplying a bargain-basement motor with unspecified castings, when the customer isn't willing to pay the premium to get the exact replacement.
Same for the block (roller or no), and the cam (again, roller vs not, and L98 cam vs peanut cam vs 929).
Who knows what the PO might have done. For all you know, you might have a flat-tappet truck TBI motor (low-bid) in there under your TPI. Wouldn't be a big surprise, that's for sure. Considering that it sounds very much like somebody stuck that motor in there just to sell it, I'd be willing to bet it's the cheapest thing they could buy that had 350 cubic inches. I hope not, but unfortunately that's the hard reality you might be facing.

The full casting number is 14101083, and you can see it by removing the oil fill cap on the valve cover and shining a flash light down there.

well i have the bill for the motor and it wasnt replaced just to sell it, it was replaced previously at a shop for my freind whom i bought the car from. he drove the car for 4 mths before i got it. the bill lists the engine as a replacement motor, no mention made as to what engine it was.

k if im not mistaken the oil fill hole should be towards the front driver side of the motor, mine is towards the back, driver side, the only number i can see is a six and theres a circle with a line through it, think two half circles next to each other, bout to pull the valve cover and figure out whats up.

PCV is supposed to be on the driver's side front; oil fill driver's side rear. PCV return air feed to pass side rear. Sounds like all of that is put together correctly.

Re: whats the l98 head casting no.?
bingo right casting number, jesus that valve cover was a PITA. anything else i could check for verification?
oh and one more thing, intake has oil in it, not a huge amount, enough to make it oily but not wet, im guessing from the previous motor taking a crap since i have excelent oil pressure. since its probably going to ruin my questionable 02 sensor anyways, is it a big deal if i take some carb cleaner to the inside of the intake while its running?
----------
to be perfectly honest i payed a unfairly low price to a freind of mine for this car, if it isnt perfect i really cant complain but i just want to know what im working with. he didnt pull a fast one on me im just worried the shop that did the engine swap pulled a fast one on him. so i have l98 heads, any chance that they would do the heads right, since they are new, and the rest of the motor wrong? i find a mix and match situation to be unlikely but who knows?

That's right. I'm used to my '91 where the oil fill is in the driver's front and the PCV is the driver's rear of the valve cover.
