Cam selecting... any sugestions?
Hey guys!
I am in the middle of building up my 350 and i'm trying to match my cam according to my current setup. This is a critical piece to the puzzle as we all know so any thoughts, opinions and sugestions would be helpful in my quest to building a well-balanced engine. Here's what I got...
Build list:
350 CI (87 HYD ROLLER)
083 Stock head (Fully Port & Polished)
Hardened pushrods
Ported upper TPI plenum
Siemised runners
partially sieimsed & ported/port-matched lower plenum
5 speed tranny
3.73 gears
Accel GEN 6 DFI
Adjustable FPR
Ignition system upgraded
headers & full exhaust
Here is the cam that I am pondering about:
Brand: COMP Cams
Product Line: COMP Cams Xtreme Energy Camshafts
Part Type: Camshafts
Cam Style: Hydraulic roller tappet
Basic Operating RPM Range: 1,500-5,500
Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift: 218
Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift: 224
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 218 int./224 exh.
Advertised Intake Duration: 269
Advertised Exhaust Duration: 276
Advertised Duration: 269 int./276 exh.
Intake Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.495 in.
Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.503 in.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.495 int./0.503 exh. lift
Lobe Separation (degrees): 112
Intake Valve Lash: 0.000 in.
Exhaust Valve Lash: 0.000 in.
Computer Controlled Compatible: No
Grind Number: CS XR269HR-12
Well, what do you think? A little bigger or smaller or just right? Anything WILL help.

Perfect cam for your street/strip TPI engine, get new valve springs and have the heads "worked over" for the higher lift cam (or just buy different heads)
Bigger valves in the heads too?
I wonder why it's not listed as a computer controlled cam?

That was going to be my next question; max lift of a 083 head. Whats the limit of this Head? I will consider reworking this head for now. I also have #24Lb/hr injectors. Think its enough? 2.0 int /1.5 ext to anwser your valve question. I will most likely open these up. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Cam selecting... any sugestions?
the stock cast iron 083 heads have push in studs so they cant handle a LOT of lift or they will pull the studs out. with that said im still runnin the 083 heads and i upgreaded the springs and im runnin a .487-.495 lift cam with 1.52s so a lil over .500 lift and have had no problems.....been runnin like this for over 6k now. i would not go mch over .500 on them...make sure to upgread the springs also
im runnin a camp cam 212-218 487-495 264-270 110 with 1.52 and 24lbs so im guessin your 24lbs will be fine!
i see your runnin the Accel GEN 6 DFI so you will need to tune for the cam, im runnin the stock 730 ecm and i still wish i would have went bigger on the cam.....since you have a stand alone i would go bigger then what you have picked, you can still go bigger and still tune the car very drivable for a DD if thats what you want.

Re: Cam selecting... any sugestions?
Thanks a bunch guys! I will change the valve springs when I buy this cam. I don't think more will help my torque any. I'm sold on this cam!
