Code 36 blues

Relays replaced? Check.
Wiring ok? Check.
ECM ok? Check.
MAF ok? Check.

What now? Tried replacing the relays with not only known good ones, but with new ones from GM as well. Didnt work. The harness is new anyway, but I checked it to make sure there is nothing amiss. Its fine. The ECM has been tried in my TA, didnt see a code there so thats not it. Also stole the MAF from my TA, and it still throws the code. I cant think of anything else that could be causing it, what do you think?

had the same problem. ended up being the power up relay for the MAF burnoff cycle. it's the relay right next to the burn off relay. check it out.

Maybe I missed something, but how is the fuel pump relay part of the MAF system?

I have heard alot of people haveing success playing with there TPS settings to keep the code from popping up. What is yours set@?

Depending on what year, the 86's had a defective PROM on some cars that would throw a false code 36 among others, I can't remember what year you have. This was also an intermittent code so it is possible to show up on one car and not another.

When you say you replaced the "relays" I'm assuming you mean both the MAF Power and the MAF Burnoff?

The problem is on an 88, it has a custom chip so its not the chip. Its something with the car I must be missing. Yea, all the relays have been replaced. GMTech's idea is about my best bet right now, I'm not sure where the TPS is right now (low .4's I'm sure) so I'll play with that and pray.

madmax,

As GM Tech says play with your TPS voltage. I have reduced mine to around 4.8 volts and No more code 36's.......I also had replaced mine and the tang on the pot was contacting the TB housing so the output would get stuck every once and awhile.

I struggled my code 34 for 1 year, checked TPS, wires, relays, connectors.... nothing helped until I replaced my MAF. The old one looked fine, the wire was not broken so my guess is that it was something wrong inside the MAF...

I had problems with a MAF code a few years ago. It indicated low airflow, but I don't recall the code. My problem was in the TPS, minimum air rate, and IAC settings. I'll explain. I was having low idle problems, so I adjusted the minimum air rate, and then adjusted the TPS and IAC to compensate for the new minimum air rate. The problem was that the low idle was not a minimum air rate problem, but was caused by carbon build up inside the throttle body. There is a gap between the throttle plates and throttle bores. This allows a certain amount of air through when the plates are closed. There was almost no gap on my car due to the carbon build up, so my min air rae adjustment was way off. Once I cleaned the TB, I started the car and had an idle of over 2500 rpm. At that point, I readjusted the min air rate, TPS and IAC, and my MAF code never came back. Hope this helps, and sorry if it was a bit long.

Well, he said the TPS was set at .668 YIKES! I had no idea it was that high. I dont remember setting it there before, weird. Dont know if that will have anything at all to do with 36, but I'm hoping it does.
