POLL: What is everyones base timing set to
I have seen some big differentces in peoples base timing.... I just like to see what everyone is running and what mods have been done.
I personally had a 383 L98 with ported TFS heads, Lingenfelter. 219, 219 cam(straight up) and superram. For the life of me, I couldnt go past 8 degrees base timing or would get serious pinging and lose uper rpm power.....

I run 8-10. I don't recall now which, but I would have to look at the timing mark to recall.
I am running Edelbrock 6089 (64cc) heads and have a static compression ratio of 9.75:1. Premium gas. No pinging.
Although, I live at 2400 ft altitude, so that is a big difference.
I don't recall ever hearing a ping, but a scan shows the knock count, so it must be working.
What compression ratio are you running? What Prom?
Mark.

Timing set to 6º BTDC but then I have it adjusted via the MSD adjustable timing control to 9º BTDC.

Mine's at 10, but I live at 5500ft. I wonder if 12 or more would work? I do run premium....

12 degrees BTDC. Edelbrock heads, 60cc chambers. No problems running 93 octane. I'm pretty sure my pistons are dished 4cc's.

Mine is at 0 degrees. When I was at 6 degrees I ran a best of 14.2... then I dropped it down to 0 and it ran a 13.8
Going up in timing just made it worse...

I'm running Edelbrock heads on a new short block. I've determined the CR to be nearly 10.0:1. I've backed off my timing from 10*, to 8*, to the current 4* and I still get some detonation (I think it's lessening, though). I guess I'll keep backing it off until it quits. How far can I go? Should I have to go this far? Could my ADS chip be causing the problem? I think I still have my original chip, should I try plugging it in to see what happens?

I'm new to these boards (and message boards in general) Anyway, I run mine at 10 degrees. I live in Miami and run 93 octane with no pinging.

Kevin, I think the real question is how much total timing people are running, not base timing, where total timing is the BASE TIMING + PROM ADVANCE. Unless everyone is running the same PROM timing curve, comparisons are apt to be meaningless and potentially misleading.
For instance my custom PROM commands a maximum of 30 degrees of advance at WOT. Add my base timing of 6 degrees and you get 36 degrees of total timing. FWIW, I've run @ base timing values of 4 and 8 degrees on a Dynojet and lost power compared to 6 degrees.
My car likes 36 degs total timing with the current heads, cam, and intake. Yours might like something different.

im running like 44 or 45 total timing
id have to hook up the laptop to fond out for sure.
it varies with the dfi to RPM, but its 43, 44, 45 all over.
i got afr 190 w/65cc, superram, 224-236 @ .050 525 LIFT
runs fine on 89 and up gas.
goes 12.70`s and better on e.t. streets or slicks on motor

I agree with Mark.
My Performance Resource chip has 36 degrees into it. So I ahd to set my timing at 0 degrees to get my total of 36 degrees at 3000.
Worked like a charm...

I set my base timing by doing some test runs with the AutoXray scanner, and looking at the amount of retard (degrees) from the knock sensor. With 6 deg base I was getting 5 to 7 deg of KS retard, at 8 deg it was worse. BTW I am running 92 octane R/M fuel.
I backed it off to 4 deg, and now I am seeing only 1 or 2 degrees of KS retard. This gives me the highest TOTAL timing, around 35 deg TOTAL at WOT.
