Re: what motor do I have????

chek your arm rest compartment or in the rear storage compartment and see if there is a sticker with some codes, take a picture of that and post it here, that will help us here to see what your car came with.

Re: what motor do I have????

Behind the driver's side cylinder head, just before the bell housing on the tranny, there is a casting number. If youre flexible and good with a flash light, pop the hood, DO NOT STICK YOU HEAD UNDER THE HOOD< but if u angle is just right you should be able to see the number from outside with the hood popped. It will be grimy so u need to clean it off. OR just feel for the number.

Itll say 5.0 or 5.7. It'll atleast help you narrow down which it is, 305 or 350. Theres also stampings all over the engine that'll identify which car it when into. You will also need the cylinder head numbers to figure out how good it is.

Re: what motor do I have????

If its an 86 then its a 305 if its an 87 then look at the VIN... the 8th digit is an "8" for the 350 and "f" for 305 TPI. H for LG4 4bbl...

Your VIN should read: 1G1FP21??G....

Re: what motor do I have????

per the VIN it is the LB9 305 TPI motor. when my 86 was still a TPI I had a hard time with parts fitting also. mainly spark plug wire. make sure when you get the part you get them for the fuel injected 305 or the VIN "F" motor.

Re: what motor do I have????

You have a 1986
Your engine is the LB9 TPI (305)

Basically your stuck in the middle the block may or may not have the one piece rear main seal, your heads are the early ones with the side mounted bolts, instead of the center valve covers, your distributor is the large type, whereas the later 1987 & up used the remote coil. Otherwise its very similar to the 1987, your accessory pulleys, belts etc sould be the same as a 1987, your Heads are the same as a 1985, so the Intake is unique, IIRC a 1987+ intake will work but you have to grind out some of the holes so they line up with your bolt holes to the heads... not for the faint of heart...

Beyond that your runners, Plenum, & throttle body, are interchangable with an 85-88, 1989+ will not work because you have the 9th injector for starting, your Idle air goes through the same passage...

Re: what motor do I have????

Yeah, it's a 305. You have exactly what I have. Mine was an end of the model year so it seams they used some 87 parts at the factory. Your rearend is probably a 2:73 posi which isn't real good but you'll get power from your 700r4 tranny to make up for the lacking rearend. I'm getting ready to put a 3:73 posi just to pep it up a bit. Also if your planning on lighting your rubber up often invest in some frame ties.

Re: what motor do I have????

The NICE thing about 1986 is you have the older style heads, so you can get yourself an old 400, install that, replace the valve covers with yours, paint it all up so it looks stock and tell everyone its a little old 305.. then do a little whoop butt on them on the track... scratch your head and say I don't know it runs better than I thought.
