M.A.F. sensor

Can you install a map sensor in place of the stock maf sensor on a 1987 Trans Am 5.7? I want more clearance and Air flow. There use to be a way when the GM stock maf sensors were failing left and right. Anyone out there know how to do this?

This would require changing the computer and wiring harness.

I have the same problems w/ my MAF.

Someone on the board mentioned before a company that makes better ones that use a film instead of that crappy thin wire!! I think GMTECH knows who.

Holy $h!T.

Are you telling me that for approx. $180 I can dump the MAF and install a MAP w/o changing the computer.

Is that all you have to buy?????

Please, let me know.

There are two differnet control systems for TPI.

85-89 uses a Mass Airflow Sensor to determine the amount of air entering the intake.

90-92 use a Speed Density system that used a Manifold Absoulute Pressure sensor to measure the amount of pressure in the intake to determine airflow.

You will see a lot of arguemnts over the 2. Facts claim that a MAF system responds better to mods.

Personally, I have had enough trouble w/ the MAF, so I would like to see it gone. Usually, this meant that you would have to change the computer and wiring harness which is a PITA and quite well out of my price range.

What I am hoping is that there is a way to do this with the kit mentioned above and not having to change the ECM.

So can anyone expand on this and let me know???????

Its not a kit, its a replacement MAF that uses a different method for measuring the air. If you want to go to a MAP sensor, then you will have to do some wiring changes and swap computers.

No, the Wells unit is a replacement MAF sensor that is supposed to be better than the stock GM unit, and cheaper too.

To switch to a MAP setup, you need the computer, wiring harness, and MAP sensor, along with the correct intake plumbing.

Thank you!!

It was confusing since the orginal question asked:

Can you install a map sensor in place of the stock maf sensor on a 1989 Trans Am 5.7? I want more clearance and Air flow.

I'd rather say with MAF, just realize that the wire filament MAF just don't cut it.

Are these the ones I have heard mentioned before that use a film rather that a wire filament??

Regardless, sounds like a great mod.

They flow the same cfm or better, right?
