what is that relay?

Ok, another simple question for those who know these cars. On my 87 GTA behind the passenger headlight assy, located on the backside of the radiator support there are 2 relays, one of em is beyond destroyed.. melted etc.. I need to replace it.

I have no idea on the part # cause most of it is missing. I need to figure out what relay is directly behind the headlight, almost directly in front of the air cleaner. there is another one on the side of the radiator mount. The mounting bolts are pointing at the fender.

Anyone got an idea?

Also of note when i turn on the car (run or start) the fan turns on.. is this normal?

Re: what is that relay?

Not sure on the relay right off the top of my head - but no, the fan shouldn't come on right away, it should stay off until the car warms up.

If I had to guess, I'm thinking that's a fan relay...

FYI - Autozone's got a page that lists some relays and their locations..

http://www.autozone.com/N,4294897505...locsSelect.htm

I didn't see yours listed or the MAF relays, so it's not complete, as far as I can tell

Re: what is that relay?

I am betting that you have a dual fan setup and they are both the same relays.

The fans should not come on at start UNLESS there is several conditions:

The A/C switch is on

The green wire (ground) is grounded out somewhere

The motor is still a little hot (more than likely not this one)

The temp switch for the fan in the (passenger) head is bad or that wire melted off and is grounding out

Bad relay

It wants attention

It could be one of several things listed above, a lot of guess and check. Good luck.

And you may have one here on the pass side fender.

Is it this one you are talking about?

Both of the above are the relays for the dual fan setup.

Re: what is that relay?

Hmmm, well That is the location of one of em, but my relays are the wide ones, like the MAF power etc. I managed to get the complete number off of the one mounted to the side of the radiator, 10038311. I think the other was the same, the numbers that are legible look identical

Thanks for that info! I figured something was up with em. As far as the temp switch on the passenger head, where abouts is that located?

Yep, that is a fan relay. Those are the older style, my 86 Trans Am had that style and they usually had melted connectors on them.

Re: what is that relay?

Ok, so what I found is this when I tested the wires..

This the one on the backside of the firewall in front of filter. Not the one to side of core support.

The A/C is turned off as is the fan, car has not been started so it is cold.

Key off
_______

Black/Red (large wire) = Ground
Green/White (small wire) = Ground
Tan (small wire) = Ground
orange (Large wire) = Nothing

Key in RUN
_________

Black/Red (large wire) = Ground
Green/White (small wire) = Ground
Tan (small wire) = 12V
orange (Large wire) = 12V

So it looks like constant ground.. where does the green wire run too to trace the path?

Thanks for the help!

Re: what is that relay?

Fan relay 1 and fan relay 2. Same deal on my brother's old 87 T/A- one melted badly. Some dingbat shoved a paperclip between 2 connectors in the semi-melted plug to run the fan constantly. We repaired the connector, shoved in a fresh relay and everything worked perfectly.

Re: what is that relay?

Ok, so i unplugged the connector off of the one to the side of the radiator core. WOW what a freaking disaster! All the wires were melted or just plain missing there sheathing about a half from the back of the connector into the loom. 3 were touching each other. So i repaired them and thats good, but does not stop the fan from turning on when i start the car.

So I traced that dang green wire from the other relay down and found the fan temp switch, ARRGG again melted and just falling apart. Why is every connector on these cars just disasters. (not just age).

Anyways I will get another connector and temp switch and see how that goes.
