Cold start injector?Can I eliminate?

I think my cold start injector is leaking fuel. Can I just disconnect it and leave it in the intake? Any problems with that? My car isnt run in winter.Any puter problems?

I got rid of mine when I installed my super ram nearly a year ago. No error codes with original chip and my car starts up just fine. I even drove it all last winter and never had a problem with it starting.

The cold start valve is on an independant circuit from the ECM. The ECM does not know anything about it. IT uses a coolant temp sensor to control how long it fires. So if you disconnected it from the fuel rail and pluged the fuel rail off, you could leave it in the runners without a problem.

I just replaced mine, it was leaking bad! Now it starts like a dream. I should un hook it and see how long it has to crank.

Mark.

Now I'm getting confused. On the PROM Board (https://www.thirdgen.org/messageforum3/Forum10/HTML/000088.html) there is a dicsussion re the cold start inj and the opinion seems to be that if one removes it you should upgrade to an 89 bin (for the 86-88 units) because the 89 doesn't use the cold start inj. So, does the ECM/chip/bin control the cold start inj or not?

They're right, the ECM has no knowledge of the cold-start injector. With the '89 bin, they used the computer to greatly increase the amount of fuel added (by the 8 regular injectors) at colder coolant temps, decreasing the amount as the engine warms up. They were able to eliminate the cold-start injector this way, and also allowed finer tuning of cold-start, open-loop operation.

I understand whats happening with the 89 code, but the impression I got from the question was removing the cold start inj on prior years w/o upgrading to the 89 bin. Is that doable w/o modifying the bin?

Yeah, it'll work, but you might have cold start-up problems. Since your engine needs extra fuel when cold, and this amount increases the colder it is, you might be cranking a few seconds longer or it might not run quite right until it's warmed up some...

If the cold start injector is still bolted in, simply pull the electrical connector off.

If the injector is actually leaking, then remove it and make a plate to plug the hole for the injector in the intake/runner.

You do not need the cold start injector to start the engine. Also, you will not get a error code for removing the injector or disconnecting the electrical connector.

Last year, I install an '89 and up Superram which had not provisions for the cold start injector. I simply did not bolt in back in because a could not and I remove the connector so that it wont open. What I should do is to pull the fuel line fitting for the cold start injector off the back of the fuel line and plugged the hole.

I'm still running a chip designed for '87 but I am not using the cold start injector. I have had no problems with this set-up.
