Just as a general question, what do you have to do to a pre-'87 mainfold to make it fir an '87-up head, and vice versa? I heard all you have to do is ream out the inner two bolt holes on either side, and it'll fit? what about newer intake on older heads?

I've done it with an Edelbrock Performer intake. I'm using 1988 centerbolt heads on a 1984 shortblock, with an old Edelbrock Performer intake. I had to make the center bolt holes oblong with a circular file, and a die grinder. I didn't have to fill in around the bolts with epoxy, either! I just torqued everything down and there are no leaks anywhere. So, yes, these things are interchangeable. Make sure if doing head swaps that you observe whether the head requires self-aligning rockers, or not. That's about the only sticky point I can think of.
