88 L98 Headers and what cam?

I have an 88 350. I recently put the SLP 1 3/4 headers on it. My bud has a gtech and the times sucked. I wont say because I dont want to be laughed at for weeks on end. Anyway would the headers being too big for basically stock engine actually hurt my 1/4 mile? I say it did. I have some crap to finish on the car too but I think my main problem is the headers. I have Guido's old setup, the SLP runners big mouth base and ported plenum. Will I get my low end back by putting the new TPI on there? I also plan on a cam and new TB at the same time. What cam is good for the SLP runners? Or what is a close guess? Right now I have stock heads. I plan on a 396 smallblock with a miniram for next spring/ summer. That is why I got the big headers.

I doubt the headers hurt you. I would look at the SLP's as the cause of your lost torque.

Umm I haven't put the TPI setup on yet. My only mods to my car is an AFPR, K+N, Random tech cat, Borla cat back, SLP headers, and MSD wires. Oh and the t-56 in my sig. So of the mods I have done I think the headers are the only thing that is able to hurt me. A cat back and higher flow cat can only help me right? I have no low end, only over 32-3300 rpm. But then it only pulls to 48 or so when it chokes. I also have a new MSD distributor, 1.6 roller rockers, pullies, MSD box, plugs, SLP cold air kit, an air foil, and the new TPI described above. What else if not the headers could be my low end loss problem?

On a stock 350, 1 5/8" would have been better.

In a recent article in a June 2000 Chevy High Performance magazine, they did various modifications to a Goodwrench 350. The base was 236HP and one of their first mods was 1 5/8" headers. They continued making various modifications (cam, intake, various heads) and when they attained 402HP they upgraded to 1 3/4" headers. The HP gain was 7HP.

I know a lot of people recommend 1 3/4" headers, but the fact is, 1 3/4" are for when you have SERIOUS HP. Frankly, if I had 1 5/8" headers and 400HP, I don't think 7HP is much of a gain for the expense of switching to 1 3/4" headers.

For a basically stock engine, 1 5/8" headers promote more torque (especially with TPI) than 1 3/4" headers. But if you ultimately want over 400HP, then you should get 1 3/4" headers...not for their enhancement on a basically stock or mildly modded motor, but for future modifications.

Thats is really good information Glen, but it doesnt really answer my question. I want to know if the headers hurt me or not. Also what should I looks for in a cam for the SLP runners? And why are roller cams so friggen expensive?
