What is causing my car to run so rich??

I have an 87 camaro with a 305 tpi. It starts right away in the morning but later in the day if I try to start it I have to give it gas inorder to get it to start. It idles realy really rough plus I can smell gas lik its running rich. When on the freeway sometimes it will throw a code 34 and a 45. I know the 45 is the O2 sensor. Could the O2 sensor or the maf cause these problems or is it something else?

Check and/or replace the O2 sensor, MAF sensor, MAF sensor relay (located on the firewall on the drivers side) and also check and/or replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor. The CTS can cause a condition with the symptoms you stated. I had a similiar problem and it ended up being the CTS and the O2 but it would only throw a code for the O2, and this would only happen occasionally. Hope this helps.

Just a note about the TFS Twisted Wedge Heads for irocbsa. Those heads were recalled some time ago. If you are experiencing any problems with them you should call TFS and get them replaced. Although they no longer honor the original recall they will replace them for the cost to make them (around 600 bucks). This only applies to the Twisted Wedge Heads for the SBC.

Thanks for the help that reminds me that when I first got my car it threw a code for the CTS. Where is that located and how can I check it?

The recall was based on bad valve springs. One of mine broke awhile back. I contacted them and they sent me new ones with the updated design.

The CTS is on the front of the engine on the intake manifold on TPI cars. It is relatively simple to get at, just remove your ducting for the air intake and possibly your belt if you have a serpentine. Can't miss it.

To test it, (assuming you don't have a scan tool), measure the resistance. The resistance decreases as the temperature rises IIRC. No resistance is a high temperature reading, unlimited resistance is a low temperature reading. -40C or +151C will through a code. Also a short or open circuit will cause the same effect. 4.7K ohms = 55*F.

Actually a bad CTS will cause your car to run rich also. The CTS tells the ecm what temperature the engine is. When it is not upto "operating temperature", the ecm will start adding fuel believing that the engine is cold. That is one of the problems with using a 160* T-stat without using an eprom adjusted for the cooler temperature; the ecm adds extra fuel because it thinks the engine is still cold.
