Need quick help on FUEL PUMP install!

I'm replacing mine with a Holley 255lph unit. Yes, I know I should have bought the Walbro, but I couldn't find one quick enough! Anyways, Besides getting the tank out and all that BS, what do I need to do once its out? Remove old one and install new one? Remove pulsator or something? What and where is it? Thanks for any help!

*I heard of a few people doing the "hole in floor" method and I know a lot of you were against it. WHY?? It would be 10 times faster with no ill side effects. No structure loss or anything so why not do it? Thanks again

People who prefer to eliminate the pulsator use a short piece of hi pressure fuel line. Autozone does not carry it, but I know that NAPA does. Make sure you put in a new pick-up screen if the Holley did not come with one.

I for one did a fuel pump hatch modification. Why not? Did someone say you will actually lose structural stability. Oh Please! If someone was that worried, then frame tie it.

If on any car, a third gen should have this hatch. What other car do you have to drop the exhaust, drop the rear end and far as you can w/o breaking the brake lines, drop the damn exhaust shield that never stays tight (once done, screw some extra sheet metal screws it that w/ some loc-tite, since it will never have to come off again!) blah blah blah. Definate engineering flaw.

OK! Thanks. I think I'll do that hatch thing too. I heard "structural stability" somewhere and I thought BS! Anyways, where exactly do you cut the hole at? Also, what does the pulsator look like or whereis it located? Thanks again

This would be a good tech article to write.

I happen to have an 89 formula body sitting at my house I am going to junk in the spring; maybe I should do the cutout and take some pictures of the process.
Right now it doesn't have a drive train or the tank in it, but without the rear and exhaust in the way it would be cake to temporarily bolt the tank back in and do the mods...

Unless somebody wants a stripped formula body No interior, no nose , but it's a straight, rust free body.
Come get it and its free.

Whats up ?
I have a junk camaro in my driveway,Its an 86 & I cut a hole in the trunk area to see if its possible to remove the fuel pump and those long *** lines that run across the outside top portion of the tank. Fellows I DONT THINK SO!!!!!!! Some things can be cheated but I dont think this can. Dont "F" up your car by cutting a serious hole in it. U see, when I cut the hole. The hole started getting bigger & bigger & bigger!!! because U have no IDEA OF WHERE TO START CUTTING. After U cut the hole then U have to try to manuver that long *** float/pump assembly out of the hole U just hacked in the back of your car with those long *** welded steel, external fuel lines still attached. AS I SAID BEFORE I DONT THINK SO!!
just my input

P.S. dont do it!!

Hey-
I tried it but the steel lines screwed me! We ended up dropping the tank. It didn't take nearly as long as everyone says. We had it done in less than 3 hours. Only problem is, it didn't fix my cars's problems. Oh well, at least its ready for serious fuel! Later

How did you manage to cut the hatch opening without hitting the gas tank? Is there a ton of room up there? Or did you use a cut-off tool with an air compressor?

(I dropped my tank when I replaced my pump... didn't want to cut a hole.)

Don't even think about the hole in the floor trick. Taking all the crap out to get at the tank really isn't that bad unless your car is rusted solid. Anyway, you can cut the hole but it has to be big enough to get the pump and all of the (hard) lines out. Unfortunately, that's a big hole! I'm just waiting on the pump, but mine came apart easily...

Just my $.02

BTW- I didn't cut my daily driver, I practiced on my totaled GTA. The solid lines are the problem! You could cut them and put a high-pressure union in the pressure line and clamp rubber lines on the other 3 but it still would be a mess. We dropped the tank with my dad's air tools and stuff. All we did was drop the exhaust and panhard bar and brace. I didn't even have to undo the shocks or sway bars! man, this was actually easy, why does everyone bitch about it so much? Well, talk to ya all later.

Anyone that cuts a hole in a good car, big enough to get the whole sending unit out is a damn fool.
