oil smells like gas

My car isn't being driven as much anymore so it sits for a couple weeks at a time. I just changed the oil and it smells like gas. My thoery is that my stock injectors are leaking and gas is running down past the pistons into the oil. car has 110,000. Just wondering what you guys thought. The car has bbk throttle body, slp runners, headers and exhaust thats it. thanks

Re: oil smells like gas

most of the time when you smell gas in your oil that means you are burning rich. do you get a little puff of smoke when you start it up?

or if you are also loosing some oil then maybe the rings are going bad, but you would notice that, you get lots of smoke.

Re: oil smells like gas

My 94 Lt1 had gas in the crankcase. The problem was a bad fuel pressure regulator.

Your theory on the injectors makes sense. I'd suggest putting a fuel pressure gauge on the schrader valve in the fuel rail, then prime it by cycling the fuel pump a couple of times, and see how long the rail holds pressure. If it goes down pretty quick, then you've got leaking injectors. You should also get a voltmeter, and check the ohms resistance of each injector. They should be around 14-16 ohms. Any less than that indicates a faulty injector coil.

Re: oil smells like gas

i dont know.....cause i had the same problem tooooo. i let it sit for 2 year, but idled it every month and changed oil every two months, it smelld like gas. i was hella worried. but it could be lots of thing, gotta narrow it. my pickupcoil(in the distributor) had completly cracked through the permenant magnet six different spots,. it was corrupting the signal to the ecm, and ecm over riched it to compensate, sometimes wouldnt even start. and when it did, took a while to start again. NEXT. because of hard starting (5secs to start) gas would accumulate in the cylinders and get compressd past the rings(112K miles). after "rebuilding the dizzy half way up and down" I moved on the the fuel department. I got a fuel pressure tester gauge. I tested the pressure, and guess what. it dropped from 47 to zero in 15 seconds after intial prime. i thought it was the fuel pump. i swapped it out and used a "fuel injection" rubber hose instead of the pulsator( i should have used neoporane?) and got the same reading...I swapped out the injectors with some VEMONS, 19#, and a GP fuel pressure regulator. not as bad as a drop, but still a drop. WTF<it turned out the fuel pump i swaped out was the same pump i replace...a quote unquote "Auto-retrofitted china piece of crap-zone" fuel pump. ... perhaps a compression test is in order? or adjust the TPS>controls richness too. A split wire on the coolant sensor>? Im no specialist BTW

Re: oil smells like gas

I am in the same boat as you guys. I changed the oil about 2 weeks ago and it reaked of fuel. Then, last Friday, same thing. Changed it, went to track for tnt and before the end of the day, it smelled again. The car runs great and doesn,t seem to have any loss of power. wtf??? I am pretty upset with her now after this whole deal.

Re: oil smells like gas

Could be several things. If you dont run a synthetic your engine will wear faster unless you change your oil very often. Under alot of situations this will increase your engine wear (running regular oil) and makes it easier for combustion gasses to blow by your rings and into the crankcase.

Worn valve guides can also cause this problem, just not to the same extent.

Also, dont forget that oil and gas are both fossil fuels that are refined differently. I'm not a chemist, but I'd be willing to bet that as oil breaks down it could end up resembling something that might share some properties as gas. Just a thought.

Bad injectors and AFPR's also can cause this problem. I killed my original 305 TPI years ago thanks to some really strong fuel injector cleaner (shorted the injectors) and it made the oil smell like gas... and just as thick. 7psi oil pressure

Also you have the PCV system which should be closed that helps deal with this problem. All the extra crankcase pressure gets recirculated back into the throttle body (so dont run valvecover breathers!) and that carries with it fuel odors...which travel around with the oil, if that makes any sense.
