ok guys, prove my friend wrong.

ok, my friend says he found a website that says his '86 T/A 305 TPI/auto is rated at 215hp and that the 190HP version was the 305 H.O. I told him that the website might me mixing up facts with the '85 year, since they WERE rated at 215 in '85, but were choked down to 190 in '86 due to less aggressive cam profile and crappy exhaust. Who's right?

I can tell you for sure that my 1986Irocz 305TPI was just 190hp,
but unfortunately I think I remember a few 215hp T/A's running around too. That's just my memory so I'm not really sure on that.

Car: '86 IROC-Z + Misc. project cars.
Engine: Supercharged + Nitrous TPI 355 CID
Transmission: Art Carr built Th700r4
The standard transmission TPI cars got the same cam as the 85 cars and remained at 215 HP. The auto trans TPI cars got a milder cam with less duration an where indeed 190 HP. GM advertsed the higher number (215 HP) in their sales literature at the time so that is why a lot of people think they were all 215 HP.

215?210?205?190?185?
Theres no 200 in there, anybody see that somewhere? I didnt know the horsepower rating of the 86 T/A was such a hot and debated topic(see also the Nun thread below)All I can say is this I had an 86 IROC-Z LB9 and it ran a 15.6 stock.Who has a stock 86 LB9 T/A on this board, anybody?I bet they are no faster then my IROC was.I really dont think Chevy(the LB9 is a CHEVY engine not a Pontiac) would have let its top of the line Camaro only have 190hp while the T/A got 215hp.I believe all the LB9 86 T/A's should be factory rated at 190hp,and 185 if you count the ducting.Everything else is incorrect.

That's right! My bad!!!
GM didn't want to warrantee the T5 behind that much torque until after they upgraded it in (I think) '87.
They all had the smaller cam in '86.
In '87 when they went to the hydraulic roller they had two different cams.
All the 86 TPI 5.0s were 190 HP.

I swear I still can't remember for sure.
I know that my 86 Irocz ran 16.3 @80 completely stock down to the tires it came with. Not very impressive. I had the 700R-4 and 2.73 rear gears.

1988. GM put the 5.0 TPI with the T5 in 1987, but it wasnt until 1988 that the World Class T5 made its debut.

ODB,

Yup - same thang:

'86 TA, 305 TPI, WS6, TH700R4 (duh!), 2.77 Borg axle, 16" 245 "Gators", stone cold stock, 16.29 @ 85.something MPH @ 730' alt.

It does a pequeño bit better with the mods, though.

That doesn't sound like much more than 190 HP from the Chevy engine in MY car, either.

Vader, that car looks sweet! I;ve been thinking about getting rid of my 92 to get an 87-90 GTA becase I like the looks alot better. 190 hp should be quicker than a low 16, my 3.1 (stock 140hp) ran a 16.18 at 83 with headers, cam, pulleys, shiftkit, catback, intake. A few weeks later I added 3,73's and got a 16.09, but my mph went from 83 to 85.6. I estimate I have 175 hp or so. I would think a 190hp fbod with more torque than I have would do at least a 15.7 UNLESS you spun on the launch. I think myet should be better than a 16.09, but the 3.73's are hard not to spin.

Car: 1985 Trans Am
Engine: 305 TPI
Transmission: 700R4
NUN:

Give it up already. Your 1986 305 TPI is rated at One Hundred and Ninety Horsepower. (Now that I spelled it out for you). I scanned the text from the Firebird Redbook to prove it in your other thread, but as of a few hours ago the thread was not working, so I will quote the text:

"Two 5.0 liter V-8 engines were typically available: the standard Trans Am engine, rated at 160hp (150 on the base and Esprit), and the 5.0 liter TPI engine, rated at 190hp - 15 less than in 1985"

"The L69 HO engine was discontinued because during it's two years of production it suffered from fuel boiling problems. Production records indicate that twenty six 1986 Trans Ams were built with this engine"

Other people have told you it is in no way 210, and you still insist on it. For Chrissakes man, you have 190 hp, be happy with it if you have that.

Also, the WS6 RPO is a SUSPENSION PACKAGE, not an electric fan or 3" exhaust package, it was 36mm (vs 34mm) rear sway bar and 24mm (vs 23mm) front sway bar.

Outwardly, the car is just as it was when delivered. I know the original owner (who lived down the street) and always joked with him about selling it to me when he was "tired of it". After he had is for six years and put a whopping 21,000 miles on it, he did just that. The only things I've done to the exterior are lowered side skirts and front air dam. I also removed the bra nose cover he installed on it. The rest of the changes and updates are on the engine, trans, and suspension, so the appearance is basically bone stock. The car was built in July of 1986, however, and does have some hints of 1987 ideas in its construction.
