RACE:1989 Chevy Camaro 5.0 IROC vs. 1993 Ford Mustang LX 5.0? Winner?

Hey everyone..I just want a overall estimate on would win a race, I'll give you the specifics...just tell me who you think would win? or is it too close to call?

1st competitor
1989 Chevrolet IROC-Z
V8 5.0 305 ci TPI Bored .30 over
700R4(Auto) transmission
- B&M Stage 2 Shift Kit
K&N Filters (nothing but the best)
3" American Thunder Catback Flowmaster Exhaust

2nd Competitor
1993 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 5 Speed
Flowmaster Exhaust
K&N Filters

Do you think the IROC has a fighting chance with the shift kit? Whats your honest opinion? Why would the one win? Would it be really close? just reply thanx...by the way Im the guy with the Camaro..

Frank

As long as the guy in the Mustang knows how to drive he should win pretty easy.

To make it closer though, make sure you start from a dead stop.

The stang l/x is more in the class of the 5.7L 3rd gens performance wise so i think he'll smoke you.

89 Camaro IROC-Z auto 2.73 1/4mile 15.6@88mph
195hp 285tq
93 MustangLX 5.0 5spd 3.08 1/4mile 14.5@95mph
205hp 285tq

Thats for stock vehicles. You would think it would be alot closer with just a 10hp difference.About a 400lb weight difference, better gears, manual trans, and the Ford 5L's powerband is the reason why.GM should have made it mandatory for the LB9 to come with a manual trans,L98 cam,and 3.45's.It would be alot closer then, and Thirdgens wouldnt have had their tails kicked so much back then by those cars, but I'd estimate your closer to 15.0 now, while the LX is in the low 14's.Yank one his sparkplug wires

The 5.0 LX would smoke you easy. Reason is he has a 4" bore, you have 3.74". Now that would equal more HP. The 302 has less stroke though. What that means is while the 302 may not be as toquey, he'll start to walk away as you pass the 60' mark. Easy. Now as far as the stock HP ratings, well, they aren't exactly accurate, (think about it, drive a stock 305 TPI and a stock 350 TPI. 10hp??? c'mon...). The 302 would respond with more HP per mod to give it pull at higher speeds. The 305 doesn't have bore, but stroke. It also doesn't respond to mods as well. This is why 305's don't get used much for HP applications. They make good mild torque motors, though, but they can't be bored over enough to get 4"(not close). This is also why the 302 Ford is in the 350 Chevy class. It's a workhorse. With the bore of a 302 and additional stroke over a 302, a 350 Chevy can be made to beat a 5.0 LX easy, though.

In other words, get a 350. Or a blower. But for the money, a 350 is a better choice. Doesn't mean a 305 is garbage, just means it's not good for much HP, just torque. Trouble is, that only lasts at low speed, doesn't help as much higher up (unless I'm mistaken).

My friend have a 93lx 5.0 (Mods: underdrive pulley, no muff, intake spacer)and whith my stock 350 TPI I just take 1.5 car lenght over him. When he put his filtercharger on it, I just take 1 car lenght over him. So If you take in fact that a 350 TPI w/700R4 can easyly smoke a 305 TPI w/700R4, the 5.0 will smoke you unless he smoke his tires on place. F-body have a traction advantage on the 5.0lx ponys but you still need a modified 305 or a 350.

Race on a curvy road stay under 80 and locked in secon and you can get him, but on a stright away your toast. 93 Mustang w/ 5 speed was 225hp. They didn't drop to 215 till 94 or 95 when they changed the Throttle body and a few other things. YOu can tell a 215hp engine by the curved Throttle body.

93 GT's had 205hp due to Fords revised rating that measured production engines as opposed to a handbuilt blueprinted one in 87.They went up 10hp in 94 due to a different manifold, and air intake.

The 87 5.0 had no MAS,different cam, forged pistons as opposed to the 93 motor.
The 94/95 was slower than the 93's due to ECM,more weight and a T-bird intake to clear the new hood.
A 93 5 speed 5.0 with timing advanced, removed intake silencer, and the mods you listed ,should run at sea level mid to low 14's.
A 305 IROC single cat peanut cam needs ram air, exhaust, pulleys,MSD,coil, gutted cat, ported plenum, timing, synthetics, free mods, and traction to stand a chance.

I think he'll take you. Last October I raced my friend's 93 LX 5.0 5 speed.. he has the following mods:

MAC headers
Flowmaster catback w/ cat delete H pipe
underdrive pulleys
3.55s

while I had what's in my sig. He beat me by a car to 85mph. We were door to door to 60, but after hitting second gear at around 45mph, my car ran out of breath and he started creeping away. On the highway, he'd beat the **** out of me. But a run up to 85mph isn't that much shorter than a 1/4 mile... I hit 93 in the quarter at the track. I figure a 5.0 with his mods is a low 14 second car... like 14.1-14.3@97-100mph.
Oh btw he did have a little traction problems on launch, so did I.

You know, this is wierd, because I've never lost to any stock or near stock stang, and that's with my 305TBI with an open-element and flowmaster muffler ONLY! Are all the mudstains in my area sick or has the previous owner of my car changed cams or something?
