Fact or Fiction

Chevy mchanic told me you have to keep trouble codes clear as old stored codes can cause computer control operating problems. Anyone ever heard of this?
Thanks
Bill

I'm not exactly sure what he meant. But some codes will put your car in "limp home" mode which is a mode to get you home.
Other than that I can't think of anything else.

I'm a Chevy mechanic...I know some newer cars are like that, but I'm not sure about thirdgen's. I suppose a TPS low voltage code or one along those lines would certainly affect the ECM.

Fiction.

When the computer sees a a problem, it sets a "current" trouble code. When the fault goes away, the code becomes a "history".

The computer will erase the "history" codes after so many ignition cycles w/o seeing the fault again. They are totally benign. The computer only acts "funny" when there is a "current" codes set, like a code 42 or so. Once it goes into history, its back to normal operation.
