fuel pump issues
hey all. wondering if 2.5 - 2.9 volts at the hot wire was normal for the fuel pump. i measured this at the spot behind the rear seat. problem is the pump is not working. i re-wired the wires comming off the battery to the starter, and a new relay, checked all fuses and CB's....so im thinking of a very easy way to determine that is it the pump before i go through all that trouble. i ran a hot wire right off the battery to the wire behind the seat, and still got nothing. so, even if i still have to replace it, i was thinking of actually goign through the trunk pan rather than dropping basically the whole rear out fo the car, looking for tips on that as well. help????!!?? Re: fuel pump issues
I am not a fan of cutting through the floor but many have done this successfully here. If you search this site, I believe you will even find pictures and measurements of just where to cut.
The voltage reading you describe is low. You need to check before the relay. Do you have your battery voltage at the relay?
Hotwiring your fuel pump does seem to indicate that it is dead. Make sure you have a super good ground to your fuel tank or pump when you are taking that reading or trying to hotwire your pump.

Re: fuel pump issues
thanks for that info. ive been looking through here, havent found anything on it yet. but ive also got a 1 yr old here so i dont have all night to sit here lol....ive got 11.56 (batt volt) at the relay and the fuse on the fender. ive bought two new relays and both yeild the same result. not sure if the fusible links or other wire at the starter would have anything to do with it. i wish i knew exactly where to cut the floor, cuz i really dont feel like dropping the rear. ive planned on re-sealing the floor afterwards, and not sure what kind of tool to use either lol

all you have to do to "drop the rear" is unbolt the shocks at the rearend, and disconnect the sway bar links. thats 4 bolts, whoopty doo, other than that all you have to do is jack the rearend up, put jack stands under the subframe and youre good to go dropping the rear

yea things are kinda rusty under there, its got 122,000 miles on it. and the bolts are really tight. wouldnt be a problem if my compressor was working, but its not so im left with no air tools right now. i got info on where exactly to cut the floor pan, any ideas on what to use to do it?

Although it may seem easier and quicker to cut the trap door, I think you are better off in the long run dropping the rear end. A breaker bar, ratchet and pb blaster is all you need.
I cut the trap door in my 92 1LE. A dremel tool with a 1,000 cutting wheels will do it. Although I used my cutting wheel. What I found out was the pump will not come out without cutting the fuel lines. So then I had to cut the lines, flare them and put rubber fuel lines in as connectors. Really a pain in the butt.
After all that came to discover it was not the pump, rather a ground wire that connects under the console I had disconnected gutting the interior.
AT least if I do have fuel pump issues at the track, it is a 15 minute process to change it out. Have to look on the bright side.

Re: fuel pump issues
thanks for the info. wheres that ground wire connect at? ive only got 2.5 - 2.9 volts going back to the pump, but even when i ran a direct hotwire right off the battery it still didnt kick on. ill discuss the options with the guy whos goin to be helping with it. two heads are better than one. and see if he wants to drop the rear or still go through the floor.

I spent a lot of time tracking everything: relays, vats, 2 fuel pumps, etc. The whole time I was getting a reading that the pump had power going to it. After all that, I sat in the car to test it and the pump came alive. When I got out, the car quit.
Turns out my weight on the seat allowed the ground to make decent contact. It still took me another hour or so to put two and two together. Thread Starter

Re: fuel pump issues
There is a wire loom that runs under the driver's seat to the console. There is a ground wire in that loom that attaches close to the parking brake. When I started to gut the interior, I disconnected all that. Luckily, I just stuffed the loom under the race seat for the time being.
