Does the relocated MAT really work? Where do you guys with Firebirds mount them? Is it worth it? What are your results?

do a search,, i read in this section about a week or so ago that it only benefits cars with speed density.. i have mine relocated in front of the tb and felt no difference.

The only difference I noticed was a distinct lightening of the wallet

I have made the relocated MAT work well on my SD car, but I had to alter the factors in the MAT Tables in the eprom.

But I have not been able to find a similar table or code in the MAF eprom that indicates it is using the MAT for any correction to the fuel tables. The MAT does affect the "enable temp" of the EGR on MAF cars (like SD cars). I found a relocated MAT (without changing the EGR enable temp) caused the EGR to stop functioning in cooler climate (when it use to with the stock MAT location). This resulted in less gas mileage.

But for MAF cars, right now, a relocated MAT seems to cause problems with the EGR but gains you nothing in performance. It appears the "intake temperature" is compensated via the MAF. Whether it does it well or not is not known as no MAF owner has monitored in enough temperature ranges. This requires a LOT of Diacom data.

I would probably say, that when a person gets there MAF car to 128/128 perfect they will probably find some deviation, but probably not enough to worry about (unless you are a fanatic). But, it could also be that people that live in areas where they get wide temperature variations need to alter the MAF Scalar table to compensate between the coldest winter and hottest summer. Wish I had a MAF car so I could test this.

But the controlling of intake temperature seems to be more of a function of the MAF and not the MAT on MAF cars.

I've never done it myself but it seems to me that the only ones that will benefit from the relocation of the MAT are the ones who program their own chips! But then, the next question is, how do they know that the modifications of the chip alone isn't what gave them the performance increase! The only way to test that is to do the modifications to the chip and leave the MAT where it's at to see what gave the engine the performance increase! Also, if you don't have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, the relocation of the MAT won't be beneficial at all!!

I would not say that a relocated MAT should be thought of as a performance modification. Instead, I would think of it as modification that ensures you always get a correct air temp reading and the proper correction factor for all weather conditions. This ensures that no matter what the temperature, your engine will always be at peak performance.

Again, this is only for SD cars. The MAF on MAF cars appear to handle this function. The unknown here is how accurately.

I did the MAT relocate on my '89 TPI 350 car and it runs rich.

In the MAF cars the actual maf measures the weight (mass) of the air. This includes the temperature (cooling effect on wire) humidity (same way)

Speed density needs to compute this using the map and the iat sensor so the mod will work for them between the time of cold start and fully warm since some 'crossleak' of temp through the alum it is mounted in will cause the readings to wander a little. The gains are only as good as the prom though.

Leave it be on the maf, you will see nothing.
