What is the peanut cam? I have heard this term before, but I have no clue what it means.

The peanut cam is a very restricitve cam out on to some 3rd gens for one reason or another. I don't know the exact years it was used, but I know that my 86 Trans Am has one.

The peanut cam was installed in 86-89 305 TPI automatics, all 305 TBIs, and all LG4s. The 85 305 TPI (automatic only that year) has the L98 cam profile, as do all 90-92 305 TPIs, auto and 5 speed.

Hrmmm, I've got an 86 IROC TPI Auto. Hate the transmission, but had it rebuilt last year so I'll have to wait a bit before I take the effort to drop a T-5 or T-56 into it. I'm looking to get a littel more power out of her for the time being, preferably with a new cam, but I'm not sure what I want yet. I know there have been other cam posts, but those are pretty vague, so here's my question: What cam will give me the biggest power increase without making too many other modifications? Basically I only want to have to replace the lifters and springs if it will give me a respectable amount of power for the money. Hopefully i can pick up 25+ horsepower since I've got teh restrictive cam in my car now.
actually from 83-90 all 305 motors got the peanut cam(in .269 ex .276) except the 305 tpi manual cars from what i have heard the cam the manual cars got was the same as the 350 cam (in .273 ex .285) anyone know if this is correct??? all info from my gm shop manual.
now back to my original question the lt1 cam does anybody else have any info on it ???

The LT1 cam is basically identical to what you have now if you ran 1.6 rockers. It has very nearly the exact same duration as the L98 cam, just more lift. So in your case it is definitely not worth swapping cams to gain a little lift.

I'm running an LT1 cam with 1.6 roller tips in my L98.The L98 cam was .415/.430 lift and the LT1 cam with 1.6 rockers is roughly .477/.489 lift.I didn't gain much duration but the gain in lift is substantial, especially if you look at the cam specs on some of the new crate motors.I believe the RamJet 350 is only around .451" or so.
