iroc is slower after mods
iroc is slower after mods
i have an 87 camaro with a 305 tpi
it has fastburn heads
shorty headers
it has a comp nitrous cam
with intake lift at .502
and exhaust lift at .512
duration is 224,236 at .050
and 113 lobe seperation
3.73 gear
2,200 stall converter
shift kit
flowmaster muffler
timing advanced to 8 degrees
i have just gotten done
installing the headers,cam
and heads and the car started
and sounded ruthless, but when
I took it out and drove it, it
was a dog. it felt slower than
it was before.
i am going to get a chip for it
in a week, will this improve it?
also is the timing off or
is the cam too radical?
thanks in advance

thats a pretty good sized cam for a 305. have you tired a higher press with the fuel?i thought stock seting was like 45psi or something like that.

I would say that you deffinatley are in need of a custom prom, especially considering that cam and heads. Head over to the prom board and read the tech article, it's a lot easier than you would think and it's cheaper to buy the equipment and do it right than it would be to buy a "custom" prom.
I agree that cam seems a little large which NEEDS some changes to the prom to run correctly. By the way how did you get the dastburn heads to mate with your TPI base, aren't they the same style as the vortec heads ie, tall skinney intake ports?

i will be upgrading the injectors after i get some money to buy them. i am getting the chip this week so hopefully that will help .
what we did with the intake was had aluminum welded onto the top of the intake ports and then it was milled down. then the ports were ported out to match the fastburn heads and we wobbled out the bolt holes. i didnt want to wait for scoggin dickey because i just called them and they delayed their intake another month, i dont think theyll ever get it done.

Sounds like you need more fuel. Get it dyno tuned to see what is going on. You may need larger injectors and some PROM tuning. Also, did you have the heads milled down to 58 cc?

I can see several problems:
1. Fast burn heads have a 62cc combustion chambers which would put you at 9.0:1 compression which is to low for that cam.
2. Fast Burn heads have a 210cc intake runner which is way to big for a 305.
3. Your cam selection is a little big for a 305.
4. You did not mention any induction mods???
5. You do not need a custom chip to make this combination work, you need more cubis inches. A 350 would work but a 383 would match the heads better.

That cam sounds way too big for a 305. It's going to be especially bad with a TPI on top of the engine. I've got a 355 with the hotcam (duration 218/228) which isn't even as much as your cam, and it runs rough without having a custom chip. The TPI also chokes the hell out of it past 5000 rpms; your cam has an even higher powerband so it'll be worse. But having a TPI setup with your cam is only adding to the problem of having too small of an engine for that head/cam combo. That cam needs a miniram/superram intake, also. Like Fmsracing said, I'd look into getting a new or used 350 short block and swapping your goodies onto it, you'll be much happier. Also, if you can afford it, get a stroker kit for that 350, it will help even more.
i am expecting the car to have a bit more power and it seems to have less.
the heads were milled down to 58cc and we used the thinnest gasket on them
the only induction that was done was the ports on the intake were matched to the heads and the plenum and runners were ported
i do not have the funds for a different motor i only have about 60 dollars for a chip

Seriously, those guys are right, your combo is set up to make mondo top end power, but no doubt it is a slug off the line. With smaller heads that cam wouldn't be so bad, but those heads are huge for a 305.
Your best bet if you have no money is to pick up the cheapest carb set-up you can get your hands on, which sucks cuz good luck finding used vortec pattern carb intakes cheaply. But that would be your only hope of making it run right without a completely upgraded TPI and chip. With a nice carb intake on it i'd bet that thing would sing to 7k.

I agree, the cam is off for a tpi. The lift is good but the duration is waay too much. I don't think the cam will work well with a tpi no matter what heads you have on it; the tpi just won't support the rpm the cam wants-even seriously modified.
I would do what the others said and either change out some parts or look for an engine that can use that stuff.
60 bux aint gonna solve your problem, I can't even think of a chip that costs that little. Good luck though!

I picked that up 87, but i let it slide. Reason being, anybody smart enough to describe how to make a regular SBC intake work on vortec heads is hopefully smart enough to check for valve/bore clearance issues. Not all big valve heads have interference problems, in fact, i think most really don't. They're undesireable because of the shrouding of the valves, but i think most don't actually run a valve into the bore, at least at human lift levels.

the heads are cast iron vortec heads
i thought fastburn but have been told that they only made fastburn in aluminum
i found out part of my problem
the nitrous switch was on and
the tank off so it was shooting fuel
in the motor and flooding it
i switched this off and it helped a bit
but below 3300 rpm it is still like a slug
i turned the fuel pressure up to the max
50-52 and it idles better and feels
a little stronger. i know i need new injectors can you change the nozzles on the stock ones? also it runs and idles a little better when the knock sensor is disconnected.
the brakes dont let me torque it up past 2200 because of vaccum so this explains my slow starts. can the injector nozzles on stock injectors be chnged?
thanks kyle

I am suprised that nobody said anything or it's just my opinion but your converter is way too small for that cam and heads concotion. Espically with the weight of the car. That could be a problem. Your best bet would be to find a 350 to work with that combo.
