Contemplating an oddball build for a cheap rod build that I am working on. I am building a 307 consisting of a 283 block .060 over, 283 rods, 327 sm journal crank, and 307 pistons .060 over. Total c.i. will be 318 by my calculations. Plan to use either Vortec, S/R torquer 305, or some stock 305 #416 casting heads. This will be basically an engine build using parts I have laying around. With the exception of the Vortec/Torquer heads I have every thing else already including a complete 305 TPI intake, and all the swap parts. This will be going into a 63 chevy II 4 door backed by a T5 and 3.42 gears. Looking for a god dependable driver that will still be easy on the wallet at the pump.

Need some help picking a cam for the engine though. Flat tapet hydraulic lifter computer compatible. Don't need a big lumpy sound or anything like that. Something mild enough to be economical yet still have enough power to handle passing on the highway. Any suggestions?

 

You could start by looking at the 85/86 TPI cam profile. That one is flat tappet. Roller started in '87.

If you're gonna tune it, then pick the cam for the power you want and tune to match!

What about something like this? I was hoping to try and get something that I wont have to do computer mods to get it to work.

 

Also have some 283 power pack heads sitting on the shelf, any thoughts on using those.

 

i have a buddy that has those on his engine.he has a 5:10 5:33 hyd cam in a 350 ,holley street dominator,750 holley carb.those heads work great on his engine.engine revs really quick too.good luck on the build,keep us posted on how it runs.later,jimmy

 

Power pack heads also do not have accessory bolt holes. Good luck with that...

 

Accessory holes are no problem, I will only have an alternator and can use the old style brackets.

 

I have that cam kit in a 305 TPI and it works great.
A 307 is really a great running engine. I used to bore them out and put used (free) 327 pistons in. Made and even better 327.

Why are you boreing it out soo much??? The walls will be too thin! If your gonna bore it out, my advice is to keep it .030" over, and while your at it, why not stroke it? Slap in a 350 crank and it'll add up to a 331ci! You'll have a nice reliable DD car with some "umph" to go with it

 

If he's using a 283 block and a 327 crank good chance it's a small journal setup
