EGR removal faqs and smog removal faqs

ok i read all the other posts about removing the EGR and it always got into how the EGR works. i would like to remove the EGR off my 89 formula firebird. the first thing i would like to know is if anyone who has a 305 tpi that has ever removed the egr on it, if they have noticed the difference in power that i have heard it is supposed to get. second i want to remove my smog system. now, i know this will give some extra power for the fact that the pump will be removed and that will be one less thing that the car has to pull. so if anyone has removed either of these please leave some feedback as too if there was a notice in power, if they notice it hurt their power. or if their car even ran right after the removal of these two. thank you.

Re: EGR removal faqs and smog removal faqs

The EGR is not going to change the power output. Dont know who told you that, its a lie. The EGR isnt operational at WOT, so its impossible for it to have any effect. There's also another lie that removing it will cause your car to detonate. None of these cars are tuned in a manner that would create that effect with a non-functional EGR. However, it will raise the NOx emissions with it removed. Honestly, there's not much point in removing it for 90% of the people out there. If its working fine, leave it alone.

The smog pump on the other hand... I've removed them just so the car is easier to work on. It wont add any significant amount of power.

well mine is giving me trouble so i was just wondering about it because if it did have any affect on power i would just spend 12 bucks on a block off plate. rather than 70 on an egr valve

It's won't change WOT or idle performance, but it will increase combustion temps in between and make it more susceptible to detonation.

Depending on how the ecm is programmed, it may reduce your highway milage.

You wont find any proof of the two statements above, just tales.

The EGR system is the only one the computer checks, so there is a high likelihood of getting an SES light after you do this.

Also, removing, disabling or otherwise tampering with a street vehicles emissions devices is a FEDERAL offense, regardless of your state or local laws. If you're caught, you could face a 10k dollar fine, jail time, or both.
The ONLY thing removing your AIR system accomplishes, is making the engine bay a little less crowded. It doesnt add or subtract horsepower. Its a decent system that keeps our breathing air clean and reduces the harmful emissions coming from your engine. Not to mention, the tree-huggers and politicians see our old cars on the street polluting and try to pass new laws that make it harder for us to own and modify our cars. Its just not worth the trouble. Please be a responsible hot rodder and keep the emissions stuff on your car, for everyone's sake.

Re: EGR removal faqs and smog removal faqs

Agreed, you wont see any differences with egr and smog removed. i know i didnt. smog pump is like 3-4lbs of weight, so no gain there either.

it does reduce clutter but thats about it, thats why i removed it. And the HSR intake doesnt have egr so i had to ditch that. You will need to disable egr in the chip to properly take it out

if your EGR is not functioning properly, you could see a slight improvement in part throttle cruise/mpg stuff, but its marginal at best.

removing the AIR (smog) system will cut your spark plug change time in half

Re: EGR removal faqs and smog removal faqs

Since I removed the A/C (not the compressor,) and brake booster, and added headers, the only plug I have trouble with is #5, which I extract from underneath the car.
