91 Z28 TPI

i Just put a downpayment on a 1991 Z28 TPI and the dealer said it was a 350 but the vin says 5.0L V8 MPI. Is it really a 350? Cause i thought they were 5.7? And MPI is multiport injection right? If so then i want my friggin money back. I figured you guys in this part of the forum would know cause you had to have taken a look right? please HELP! ...

Re: 91 Z28 TPI

If the 8th digit in the vin is not 8 then it is not a 350...simple as that! Unless someone put in a 350? But no 8 in the vin it did not come with a 350.

Need anymore help?

OHV = Over head valve. It is a 305 not a 350 and the only way you would be able to tell them apart is the casting numbers on the block and heads...good luck with that one, lol! On a side note if it is a 305 tpi manual they are just about as fast as the 350 auto...if it is a 305 auto well

I would just get the wishful thinking out of your head that if you click your heels together 3 times that a 350 will magically appear under that hood because chances are 99.9999% it's a 305 unless like I said someone put a 350 in it!

Re: 91 Z28 TPI

You will need the casting numbers off the block to 100% prove it is not a 350 because it is possible that someone put 305 heads on a 350 motor.

Casting numbers will be on the back of the block by the firewall...lol! Thats why I said good luck with that. Might be able to use a mirror and flashlight to see it if you are lucky or find a blind person and see if he can reach in there and read them like braille You can pull the motor...lol! Rub something like paint on it and try to get an impression on a piece a paper or something? Here is your casting numbers http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm

Re: 91 Z28 TPI

It might be easier to see if it's the original engine by looking at the partial VIN on the pad. If it is, it's a 305.

Re: 91 Z28 TPI

The pad he's talking about is behind the A/C condensor on the passenger side. Its there the passenger head bolts to the block. Really tough to see unless you remove the A/C unit.

The head casting numbers you can see by removing the oil cap and shining a flashlight in there. 14101081 is for a 305 TPI head, and 14101083 is for a 350 TPI head.

Re: 91 Z28 TPI

How much is he wanting for the car in the first place? If it's a good enough deal it may still be worth it w/o the 350. I would try and tell him that hey this isn't a 350 by the numbers, and see what he says. Maybe he will lower the price maybe not, but if it's still cheap enough don't worry about it and put a 350 in it yourself. However if you are wanting an original 350 car then see if he will give your down payment back based on the fact that it is a 305 instead of a 350 like he stated. Sounds like quite a pickle!

Re: 91 Z28 TPI

I was able to wiggle the wiring out the way on the drivers side behind the dizzy to see my block stamped with "5.7". Also, if you crawl under the car and get the casting numbers off the side of the block then search the net on that.

Re: 91 Z28 TPI

To much emphasis on relying on the VIN number I think ... Tell the seller to prove it's a 350 if he can't tell him to find out the blue book difference and go from there ... It could be worse you could have found a legit 350 car and got a 305 LOL ... But hey if it's what you want buy it and be happy with it.

Looks like a really nice looking car! If you don't mind me asking, what is the purpose you have planned for the car? If you're planning on building it up, racing it out, etc., then I can understand why you're looking for a 350, but as someone else already stated, you could always find your own 350 and build it up yourself! BUT! If you're just looking for a sweet looking car that has some decent "umph", then stick to the 305! It's not as "underpowered" as you may think. Just like a 350, you can add bolt ons, etc., and have a decently powered 305 that'll be just as reliable, fun to drive, and have plenty of "WoW" factor just like a 350! The IMPORTANT thing is that YOU are happy with the car! Have you test drove it yet? If not, I highly suggest you do! Who knows, regardless of what engine it has, who's to say that you don't like the ride? OR! Who's to say that you LOVE the ride regardless of what power plant it has? Good luck man!
