swap 305 block to 350
swap 305 block to 350
I have an 87 305 tpi and i want to get a 350 short block. I want to know where I can get a good short block for no more than $1800 dollars. Also, I would like to know if there are any differences, anything that needs to be changed. I was going to use all the old stuff from the 305 block until i get the money for some better parts. Finally are the stock 305 heads going to be any good on the 350 block, i know they won't flow as well, but compression will be up a little and the valves won't be as shrouded, can these heads be decent with some pocket and bowl porting and polishing and a three angle valve job. Thanks in advance for any help you can give
Go get your self a GM Goodwrench 350.....And just bolt on your accessories and intake. Then you would have a new motor with a warranty too.
oops...you will have to modify your intake bolt holes. I think that the Goodwrench motor uses older heads..but they might have a newer 87 & up roller version. That way you would not even have to mess with heads until you can afford some good aftermarket ones.

I just completed the same conversion,if you have 1800 to spend,I got my premium long block 350 for 1236.00.You can put those 305 heads on and have a nice hole shot but I don't know about the top end power. As far as what you need to change,(Flywheel). If you keep the 305 injectors I suggest an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to raise the pressure,(350 performance chip),(harmonic balancer).Good luck
Hey cowboy could you tell me where you got your block from. I also need to know what type of flywheel to get, and would i need a new starter. hate to beat a dead horse but i want to have everything i need before embarking on my little adventure.
Go to www.engineconnection.com
Lov,I tried to go to the engine connection site you told me to check out, but it just comes up blank. I still need someone to answer my question about what type of flywheel and whether i need a new starter and what kind. I have borg warner t-5 tranny.
some should create a small tech artical on this, I would but have not done the swap yet. It will be done this summer and if no know has it up by then i guess I will have to do it...that is if i don't go all the way and install a RamJet and Vortec heads.
and for 1800 you can get a junkyard 350 and rebuild it or get it rebuilt and still have money to do the swap right and get the knock sensor, a 350 ECM, 350 injectors (get them cleaned) and then make the engine pretty and still have money left ova...
