Are the S/R 305 Torquer better than stock TPI heads?

I read this article in recent magazine that by switching heads on a 305 TPI (mainly stock) they gained almost 50 hp.

1. Did anybody feel the difference after the head swap?
2. What is so good about these heads?
3. Would you reccommend these heads or not to bother?

Then I guess the stock heads must be a piece of S_ _T. or am i wrong?

Thanks.

The L98 heads are identified in that list.

There are 2 types of S/R torquers, a 305 version with 1.94-1.50 valves and a 'regular' version with 2.02-1.60 valves.

If I were buying a set, I'd get them pocket ported at the minimum and make sure I ran as much compression as possible.

I would look for some used heads if I were you. I think SPDC sells ZZ4 Aluminum heads new for real cheap. With $600 of port work, they will flow good.

There is also nothing wrong with getting your stockers ported.

be careful on valve size, you dont want to run a 350 head on a 305 and have the valves whacking the deck.

I got my vette heads for $350.00 from a guy who rebuild it, looked brand new, anyway, left the stock valves on, did a port and polish job, by new jersey performance,$300.00. $650.00 all together not bad.

The Vette heads won't have the EGR on them like the cast iron L98's, so if you need to pass a visual and functional test, there may be an issue.

Eddie, you still have the old EGR issue to deal with. Check out that website again with all of the heads listed. I'm telling you the SR Torquers may not be the hottest but they are solid performers for the $800 that you want to spend on this. I am very happy with mine. I only wish that I had some quarter mile times to back up the seat of the pants performance I am experiencing with this engine. Cast Iron doesn't have the corrosion or warping problems of aluminum. Looking at the tables, the SR's have excellent exhaust to intake ratios and are better than most stock iron heads excluding the vortec which we can't use anyway. Bolt them on, easy, emissions legal upgrade. End of story.

The vette's heads can be made Emissions legal by adding an external EGR valve just like they were on the vette. When I rebuild my bottom end, the heads will be the S/R Word products that's for sure...mild port job and bolt em up.
