What needs to be removed to replace water pump?
I think my water pump is taking a leak on my 305 TPI so I'm going to replace it this weekend. I've done the water pump on a 2.8L, but not on a 305. What needs to all come off to get to it so I am not wasting my time removing extra parts? Thanks!

With the serpentine setup I don't think anything does other than taking the belt & pulley off and removing the 4 bolts that hold the pump to the front of the motor. Actually much easier than earlier V-belt setups that attached various accessory brackets to the water pump here and there.

When I changed my water pump on my LO3, all I did was remove the belt, take off the pulley, and unbolt the water pump. It was very simple

According to chiltons, take off the belt, disconnect the hoses, and unbolt.

That is pretty much it. The worst part is actually cleaning off the old gaskets. It is probably the easiest pump I have ever installed.

cleaning the old gasket is a pain in the butt. You can get it pretty good from under the car.....but you get dripped on.

I got it changed out no problem, thanks. I have an 87 with v-belts so I had to remove alot of stuff to get the pump out but nothing rediculous.

or the more a 90* die grinder with the 3m phenolic grinding disks ( i realy don't know what i'd do without these, they are simply amazing).
Re: What needs to be removed to replace water pump?
Hell yeah, a right angle die grinder and a 3m disk is the only way to do it! Takes all of a few seconds to have a perfectly clean gasket mounting surface. Member

Re: What needs to be removed to replace water pump?
i just insted my water pump afew months ago.
i would loosen the bolts on the pully before taking the pump off. its so hard to get the bolt to come off once the pump it off i had the hardest time. i had to get someone to hold the pully wheel for me so i could unbolt it. should have loosen it off 1st before i took the belt off.
i made a mistake by not puting any sealent stuff on the gaskets before i insalled it. its still like that and so far it seems to be holding up pretty good.
the gasket just came off with the pump. i barly had to do any scraping.mostly just whiping it clean really. wasnt overly hard.
but i think its just the belt that needs to come off. and pretty much about it...
