New Here Couple ?'s About my Third Gen

Hey Everyone, Im Dave and I am new to F-Bodys. I just recently bought an 87 trans am with the 305 TPI. I got the car at a police auction for $600. Heres a couple Pics

The motor seems to run strong, burns a little oil but runs good all in all. However i am very disapointed with the cars acceleration. From what i have read these cars run 16's stock in the 1/4. What kind of gains can i expect from changing out the gear set and getting 3.73's? It seems to me that the stock 2.73's might be holding me back. Thanks for listening to my noob ranting.

Before getting into changing gears you should go through everything and give it a tune-up. Change the fluids. Get it running the way it should before modifying it. Modifying it before fixing any problems could cover up a problem that may come back and bite you in the gluteous maximus later.

Looks pretty decent for the money. You'd notice a big difference by changing the gears, especially that much. Does it have a 9 or 10 bolt rear? It would probably run a lot stronger if it wasn't burning any oil, and doing a good tune up always helps.

$600,, thats a great buy! youre wheels alone (refinished) could sell for that much.. and youre motor is an easy mid to high 14 sec car, if its in good tune, with some free mods and a quality exhaust. and then gears. then you we be luvin the tuned port! first on my list would be COMPLETE tune up, and body work. and fixing what it needs first. or u can sell it to me for $400

Wow, good score! I agree that a FULL tune up should be the first thing you do. Jeg's even sells a pretty decent kit for it including plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, and tstat. Check it out HERE:

I believe that's more like a mid to high 15 second car.

Re: New Here Couple ?'s About my Third Gen

I ran a 15.6 with mine and its the more stout LB9. I had all msd tune up things, 3 piece march pulleys, and a CAI. I think that with a full exhaust and maybe some 3.42's he could break 14's.

Re: New Here Couple ?'s About my Third Gen

14 sec lb9 needs = intake, exhaust, gear, traction. 13 sec lb9 needs = intake, exhaust, cam, stall (if auto), gear, more traction. 12 sec lb9 needs all of the following and a power adder.. unless youre 66nova. i think thats his name. im shooting for mid to low 12's with everything in my sig + crane 2032. and 13#'s of procharger.. and a few other things.. and of course it would be a hell of a lot cheaper to build say a 350 to go 12's or 13's but i could always swap out just the block in case of a pop..

Re: New Here Couple ?'s About my Third Gen

I have already replaced the distributor cap and rotor. When it is not so cold out I will change the plugs and wires. I plan on using this as my daily driver for now. This is my race car.

Although I am sure I will be racing the trans am too.
