Strange idle caused by...?

Engine: 5.7L
Transmission: 700R4
Strange idle caused by...?
This is not a huge dilemma for me or anything, but I am just curious as to why I can rev my engine sometimes and it will go back to normal idle and then sometimes it will raise to like 1000rpm and if I touch the pedal it will continue to climb? Is something getting stuck, or is that a normal thing to happen? Like I said, I don't sit around revving my engine all the time, but if I do, that is what tends to happen.
