Whats this peice?

I was putting new vacuum lines on my car when I ended up crushing this little plastic connector valve kinda thing. Now without it my car stalls out at idle.

Its on the passenger side near the distributor. It has 3 vacuum lines going into it. 1st goes back somewhere by the distributor, 2nd goes around to the charcoal canister, and 3rd goes into the back of the plenum. Whats this peice called? Is it hard to find? I've tried everything to bypass it and I've looked around for a new one but I can't find it. ANY ideas would be helpful.

Sounds like it is just a vacuum line Tee. It is used to tee off a few vacuum lines from one source. You could find them at any auto store. Just bring the broken one down to the store and buy a new one.

The "piece" you're talking about "is" OR "goes to" the vaccuum solenoid for the EGR valve! Older cars used ported vaccuum source for the EGR valve! Newer, computerized, cars (like yours) use this vaccuum solenoid to run the EGR valve! The ECM sends a signal to the solenoid in pulses, the solenoid in turn sends vaccuum in pulses to the EGR valve! My guess, whatever you crushed is preventing the solenoid from sending proper vaccuum to the EGR valve and this is causing the car to stall out at idle! Hopefully if it's just a "tee" you can fix it.... I know I've broken the line to mine TWICE and just patched it with a piece of rubber hose and some electric tape to provide a better seal for the vaccuum!

Its not a normal vacuum connector T. It has some sort of valve in it that only allows air to go in certain directions.

I will venture a guess at Fuel Tank Pressure Control Valve?

"The Fuel Tank Pressure Control Valve is located is located near the cannister and is connected to the fuel tank vapor return line. When the tank pressure exceeds the spring pressure (6.0Kpa)the valve opens. Fuel vapors from the fuel tank are now free to vent to the cannister......".

If I remember correctly mine was mounted on the AC Bracket.

Not sure if this is what you were looking for.

He said it was located near the distributor, not the cannister so I ruled out the Fuel Tank Pressure Control Valve!

It has 3 vacuum lines coming out of it shaped something like this (I think ...its broke into a million peices)

<img src="http://home.earthlink.net/~chris255/valve.jpg"

it has some sort of valve that ony lets air go in one direction. I looked at my friends 91 Z28 and it had the same thing. Before that peice broke one of the vacuum lines going into it broke and made my car do the same thing (stall out unless you leave your foot on a gas) so I cut off the broken part and it started up fine. The next day that hose broke again and when I put a new hose on it I ended up breaking that valve ...nothing has worked yet. I'm hoping I can find that part in a junkyard tomorrow.

I think you can still get it from the dealer. I think it's listed as a cruise control vacum valve. I have the same thing on my 87 T/A and one of the hoses from the valve runs to a y-tee and splites to the cruise servo the other goes to the cruise vacum tank in the LH fender. I'll check tomorrow at work and see if I can get the part number for you.

I was just looking through a Haynes manual and saw a picture of what looks like the same peice. They call it the "vacuum damper valve" In the picture the valve is on the drivers side next to the throttle body. It looks exactly the same but its in a completely different location ...might that be it?

Thats a vacuum check valve. It keeps vacuum from bleeding into the intake under accel conditions. It holds vacuum in the checkball under the battery (on fbds) or under the charcoal cannister (camaros). You can get them in the help isle just about anywhere. You probably lost control of the heat/ac vacuum operated doors and stuff.

In addition to what Joel said, it also holds vacuum for the cruise control, if so equipped. You can get that check valve at any auto parts store.

The part number for the check valve is 14056648 it's about $5.20 from a GM dealer.

I found a check valve basically like the one I broke so I rigged everything up the way it should and my car still dies at idle. I triple checked all the vacuum lines and there aren't any leaks. Another thing I noticed is that my car knocks like crazy when I gas it going down the road. I checked the timing and its at 6 degrees. I'm clueless ...this is really starting to annoy me
