85-87 TPI OWNERS

I just got the slp single inlet cold air for 85-87 Camaros. I was under the assumption that I would not have to move my battery to use the kit. My battery is located on the passenger side and the box will not fit there. Anybody else have this problem? I don't want to go through the trouble of relocating the battery. I want to know what others have done. Thanks

Oh yeah my car is an 85

Whats the 8th digit of your VIN? I'm curious if it was made from the factory w/ TPI, because I'm under the assumption (and apparenlty SLP is too) that all TPI cars had the battery on the drivers side.

If you have to relocate the battery, you may as well put it in the back.

Its the correct engine

VIN 1G1FP87F6FN140282

Unless someone else relocated it (I bought it from my dads friend, but he's kept it completely stock), I'd like to hear from some other 1985 tpi owners too.

no it is on the passenger side i have an 86 iroc-z with rpo b4z. My vin is 1G1FP87F2GN149949 and my battery is on the passenger side. Obviously since in 1986 only 50 iroc-z's came with a stock 5.7 i got shafted with the 305 and switched over to a 355. it may not be the stock motor but the battery hasnt moved.

Yeah, so I guess SLP is in error, their instructions mention moving the canister to the drivers side between the radiator and the battery which is totally wrong. These are probably the worst instruction I have ever read.

Has anybody else run into this problem? Please respond, I'm no car expert that is why I didn't want to move things around. I guess I'm gonna have to pay someone to do it and just watch them. Any idea how long and how much it will cost to move the battery?

I just put the same kit in this past weekend. The battery on my 87 T/A is on the drivers side and my friends 86 T/A is on drivers also. I don't know about the Camaro. The only real problem I had with the kit was relocating the charcoal canister, with A/C and cruise it didn't leave too much room where they tell you to mount it.

So what should I do? Move the Battery to the drivers side, it looks like it'll be a tight fit. I really really don't want to move the battery to the hatch.

RULE of thum on TPI cars:

all Camaro's Passenger side Battery
all Firebirds (including T/A & GTA) driver side battery.

moving your canister to the opposite side could be, "difficult" because of the hard lines going back to the tank. Consider moving your battery to the trunk area in the little conpartment on the drivers side, and then install your cold air intake from SLP.

Just a thought, you will move something like 1% more weight back to the rear wheels for better traction, every bit helps.

I somehow feel that was not what you wanted to hear.

Well I phoned SLP, they said to move the battery to the drivers side, the canister is already there so its just a matter of fitting both and then install the cold air, I think I may go that route, I guess instead of moving the canister like on the firebirds, you have to move the battery on the Camaro. I guess we'll see how it goes... Its just that there isn't much room there. Oh well wish me luck, I just hope I don't screw something up

Most people that install that SLP kit on their camaro's end up moving their battery to the trunk.

I think I have seen the kit advertised in Jegs/Summit with the disclaimer for camaro owners needing to relocate their battery to the rear.

I just came across this and was wondering... can't you just kinda flip the parts upside down to point it towards the drivers side? I don't see anything in the pics on the SLP site to keep you from doing that... it's what I thought I'd do when I get this setup...

Hey

I have a 1985 IROC Z Camaro with a 305 TPI, My battary is located on the passengers side near the radiator coolant collector. Im not sure why it doesnt fit, I have no clue, Maybe ur battery has came out of the holder and needs to be put back into the right position.

iroc_cragg: That's exactly where my battery is, but what I'm saying is, from the pictures on the SLP site, what's to keep you from from just taking the 90* turn from the throttle body and turning it upside down so that instead of pointing to the passenger side where the battery is, it's now pointing to the drivers side where the charcoal canister is? Is this do-able at all or am I missing something by not actually having it to fiddle with in person?

its a one way kit, you have to have the cold air kit going to the passenger side, its hard to explain but thats how it is you cannot flip the pieces over since if you did, the hole that is supposed to go downward into the black box will be facing up (hope that made sense). Anyways I ended up moving the battery to the drivers side and all is well.

My '86 IROC has the battery on the passenger side.

I just ran two 4" pieces of A/C Al ducting down to behind the fogs for cold/ram air pickup. It works fine and only a few $$.

Yeah, I really can't see whay a Camaro owner wouldn't take advantage of the system that is inherent with the stock setup on their cars. If you chop out the bottoms of those stock air boxes and put some tubing in that pulls the air from behind the fog lights, you have a damn good cold air/ram air setup without spending much cash. I would sell that SLP kit to a Pontiac owner and do the 'free' mod with the stock air boxes.

Jono: Don't flip that piece, just flip the 90* piece that comes off the throttle body. You should be able to just switch the sides the extension that goes to the box without any problems(I think... just guessing here from the pics on their site.

You can flip the 90 degree tube, but the filter tube would then be angled back toward the wheel well as opposed to the front of the car.

And even if you could flip the tube...what would you do with your top radiator hose?

guys the stock induction system is different on both cars... Firebirds have that pipe that goes into the corner so the battery has to be on the drivers side.... camaros have a "Y" set up that runs right to the front of the car... i like the idea of the ram air set up for the camaro... i just dont want to remove my fogs i like the look of the car at night when there on... it makes the ricers go screamin when they see them.....hehehe

I will sum things up with this comment:

SLP SUCKS! They have no ethics whatsoever. I have heard complaints about everything from packaging to shipping to substandard instructions to fitament, to return policies.

They don't currnet develop aftermarket parts for our cars. They are past that phase. They don't care what we think. All they care about is impressing the LS1 people so that they will spend their money.
