best method\chemical for rad flush

My rad seams to have been over looked by the last owner.And now it does't seam to flow or cool very well.If any one know's of a good method of cleaning the sludge out, or a chemical soultion could you help me out. I would like to clean the water jackets in the block.

I used the Prestone rad flush from the local auto store, but used several cans at once instead of one, and also left it in full a full day of driving instead of just the recommended 10 mins. I did this about 4 times with my '79 TA and it cleaned it up fairly well. It was like rust colored mud to start with is how bad it was!
Keep cleaning until you can drive a few hundred miles without it discoloring.

If you have a manual fan, you might check/replace the fan clutch also if it gets warm while idling in traffic then cools down once you get moving. They can go bad and not make any abnormal noise.

I've used Prestone before with good results, until I tried it in my 88 IROC. After flushing the coolant, my fan switch quit, my coolant temp sensor quit, and my CSI sensor quit. I think my thermostat may have stuck during the flush, causing an overheat. At any rate, be careful!

I took mine out (82 6.2 liter diesel Blazer) and layed it down with a 2X4 under one end. I can't remember the name of the stuff but you can get it a the grocery store. It is in a flat, green plastic bottle and it's used for removing rust and water scale from sinks, counter tops, etc. Don't get it on you. Pour 3 or 4 bottles in your radiator and every 30 minutes or so put the 2X4 under the other end the stuff runs back and forth through the radiator. Worked great for me.

We use Prestone Super flush at work all the time with good results. However it only seems to work well with properly maintained systems. If your system is pretty grungy then spring for the bigger bottle of the Prestone stuff. I can't remeber the name but I think it is just a bigger bottle of super flush.
