What is the best aftermarket cold air kit availble?
I have a 87 GTA with a TPI 350 that had a engine fire. IT now runs and I need the intake ducting. I am thinking about SLP cold air induction kit. Keep in mind I have nothing off of the throttle body and it is a MAF car.

The best aftermarket kit is the one you make yourself. I also have an 87 GTA with a 350 and replaced my sorry airbox with some pvc pipe (painted black), my maf, some rubber fitting, and a k&n on the end. Next weekend, the pvc will be replaced with aluminum piping (bent at an exhaust shop) and the smog canister is being moved. If you're interested in the plans for your own cold air kit (specifically for an 87 GTA), email me or post some more on this thread. I'm sure I and the other guys on this board with 87's can help.

Here's what I've done so far.
Here's what I did so far (will change it this weekend, but this setup works fine)
Stuff needed:
3" PVC Pipe from your local home improvement store
3" PVC elbow (the long version with one lobe already taken off, or you can cut it off if you get the 2 lobe version)
3" to 3" rubber connection (It has rubber hose fasteners on each side) (You'll find it where you find the PVC, probably on the same isle.
3 rubber hose fasteners
PVC glue
Black heat resistant paint
K&N filter part #DFM9601C. It's a 9 inch conical. Costs $37.95...find it at http://www.thefordsource.com/store/m...nduction_3.htm
My procedure:
Take out the entire airbox to throttle body assembly (including the rubber boot that connects to the throttle body)
The metal post that is left after you take out the air cleaner assembly unscrews, so take that out too.
The smog canister can be moved a little closer to the side of the car, so loosen the bolts and move it over(as close to the passenger side of the car as you can get it), and retighten the bolts
Now we can begin assembling the intake...
Use wd-40 or something slick to grease up the throttle body boot (the side connecting to the airbox) and slide the PVC elbow in (if you bought the 2 lobed elbow, you will need to cut off one of the lobes) and then use a rubber hose fastener (you will be replacing the oval shaped one already on the boot) and tighten it to the elbow
Take the PVC pipe and cut about 5 inches of it off. (You might have to shave it or cut another piece depending on the placement of your hoses connecting to the radiator)
Connect the 2 (elbow and 5 inch pipe), but do NOT glue yet.
Next, take the MAF and on the side that faces the throttle body, connect the 3" to 3" rubber fitting and tighten it.
Take your PVC pipe (now connected to the elbow and boot) and slide it ALL the way into the 3" to 3" rubber fitting. It should be about 1 cm from the MAF when ALL the way slid in. Tighten.
On your old airbox assembly, between the air cleaner holder and the MAF was a hard plastic bend. Take this off of the air cleaner assembly (be very careful not to chip or break this bend, as I did)
Place one end of this bend into the K&N filter and the other onto your MAF. Take 2 rubber hose fasteners and tighten the connections.
This assembly should fit TIGHT in the same area your old box was in. If you paint the pipe, some of the paint may become airborn when the pipe gets hot and be absorbed onto your filter, just warning you. This setup is meant to sit above the lines running to your radiator (not below as some others have done, I find this to be easier to take in and out and easier to construct). Don't forget to reconnect your MAF sensor (it will be a tight fit with that 3" to 3" rubber fitting and you may have to clip the retaining plastic off of the plug). I'm working on a technical artical to submit to thirdgen.org, and will submit it as soon as I get my pictures developed and scanned. With this mod, my car ran a little cooler, seemed to like upper rpms a little more, and made an audible hissing noise from the engine compartment. I'm currently also working on moving the smog canister and putting the K&N into the open side that the smog canister now blocks. I'll probably wait until I finish this mod to put upp the tech article. Any questions or comments are appreciated and happy thirdgening.

I used 3" alum flexible ducting from Home depot. This along with TB coolant bypass dropped .3 second off my ET's and raise MPH by 4.
I used a K&N copy for a filter. Total cost was $30.

duh...I forgot your name said "IROC". The mod I did works great on the 87 GTA, but you might check out the tech articles section, they have a few ram/cold air ideas that are easy to rig up and cost less/look better/work better than slp's kit. If you use the flexible metal ducting, just make sure you leave enough room in front of your radiator clear so you can still run cool.

Here is what I did
Stock 87TPI intake:
<img border="0" src="http://www.usol.com/~okfoz/images/87TPIengine.jpg" width="448" height="300"></p>
My PVC & Fernco intake: (less than $20 invested)
<img border="0" src="http://www.usol.com/~okfoz/images/newintakeductsm.JPG" width="300" height="448"></p>
What I did, was take a 3" to 3" Fernco to replace the bellows, a 3" to 2" PVC elbow, a 2" to 2" Fernco to attach to the MAF sensor. Less than 4" of 2" PVC pipe, and about 2 1/2" 3" PVC pipe. Put it together and it works great. It does touch the hoodliner though.
NOTE: The Fernco's are the rubber tubes that have the Hose clamps on them. Fernco is the name of the company that makes them here in Michigan. I dont have a better name.
The air filter box, All I did was drill out the metal rivet that held the plastic cap on, rather than cut up the sides, I thought, remove it all together. no problems.
The only thing you will have to be careful of is the fernco in front of the Altenator is REALLY close, about 1/4", I have a few lines where it had rubbed, but I have about 2000 miles on it without any problems.
Once you decide that it fits well together, glue it, paint it black throw it in. FLOWS A LOT better than that yuckie stock one.
On the inside of the tubes, I made sure everything was a smooth as I could make it.
Hope this helps.
