i have searched before anyone says anything, i am just looking for personal expirience on what the cam of choice is for you guys running a 305 tpi. it is a roller motor with stock 081 heads and slightly ported tpi and afpr. i am converting my car back to stock so it will be an everyday driven car, i want to keep fuel economy in mind. my goal would be to run mid to low 14"s on street tires. i have a 3.45 posi rearend and a t5.

 

Well, that would be the L98 cam, or something with a few more degrees duration. I wouldn't go over 211, 212 duration @ 0.050. Keep the lift mid .400s with those heads in stock form.

 

Wouldn't an LT1 cam give him some decent results?? Never did it myself, but I read a lot about it.

I guess if you ran the l98 cam you can get the stock chip off of a 305 car that ran the t-5 and l98 cam. Not sure how to figure it out, but I am sure there is a bin floating around for that too.

 

the motor is out of my iroc originally it is an 88 so i am thinking it has the bigger cam. the car ran 15.4 in competely stock form and it needed a tune up bad... i would like to hear opinions on the lt1 cam b/c that is what i was looking at but hadnt heard anything about people running it in a 305

 

LT1 cam was something I was looking at for my car.

I've seen a lot of TBI guys using LT1 cams with great results. I think that lb9 would be good with LT1 cam.

 

I am currently running the comp cam xr258hr12, and am very happy with it. It is a bit more aggressive than an LT1 cam. My car came stock with the L98 cam. This cam improves torque through out the power band. I have not taken the car past 3500rpm yet, because I only have 600 miles on my freshly rebuilt motor, but power comes in at about 2000rpm and hauls a$$. Also you don't need any special machining to the stock TPI heads to use that cam.

wow that looks perfect thanks! the only thing is that i will eventually be downgrading the rearend to preferably a 3.08 or a 3.27... that cam is calling for 3.45 gears. and do you know of anyone with any real expirience with that cam?

 

Actually the shop that did the work on my motor made sure that the stock heads would have the clearance to handle that kind of a lift (otherwise they would have ground down the bosses).
The springs were upgraded, however both comp cam and also the shop told me that it wasn't necessary to go with screwed in studs with that cam.
I love the way the car sounds and the power increase. I would have gone with the XR264hr12, but was not sure how well that would have worked with the stock speed density computer. Also, I would have had them put in screw in studs and machined the heads for the dual valve spring for that cam.
I went with the slightly milder cam. My fuel economy might by about 1 to 2 mpg less than it was, although it is a little hard to tell now. I love the torque out of this cam. Can't wait until the engine is broken in so that I can dyno tune the car.

To tell you the truth, I have never been to a track before. I have heard horror stories about people braking transmissions and drive line parts because of hard launches. I think I need to inspect and update the drive line first before I can make it to the track. I think I will add an aluminum drive shaft and replace the the u-joints (GM skipped out on that since my car came with AC). Change the oil in the trans and rear diff. The shop that rebuilt the motor replaced the clutch at that time so that part would be OK.
But first I am going to dyno it and have a custom program burned for it. Will be dealing with this in about 2 months, after the engine has had at least 2k miles. I will keep you updated on how that turns out.

 

The cam that I sugessted is the Crane 2031. I have the Crane 2032 which is also popular with lots of us. The 2031 will be a little more stock ECM friendly, will work well with stock heads, and build power just a bit lower in RPM than the 2032.

I'd bet that you could do a search on 2031 and find some posts on it as well.

 

how do you like the 2032, and what kind of mileage and how much power are you making, also how streetable is it? it is too much duration for me though so i was thinking about using the 2031 with 1.6's what would that put my lift to about .480?

i will do a search i would like to find some more info on this cam i am impressed it looks like a good candidate, i like the 112 lsa it should be a little throaty, i am using nitrous on this motor so i am just looking to be in the mid 14 range on street tires, which i dont think will be too hard, i ran a 15.4 with a auto and 2.73 gear and stock everything. the new setup will have an undecided on cam lol and roller rockers, ported tpi, afpr, a manual, and 3.45's + at least a 100 shot. i am pulling the 350 out as we speak.

 

The PO installed an LT4 cam in my IROC. Runs really good. Good low end and pulls harder on the top end than stock.

 

for pep and economy with a 3:08 rear and T-5, I'd stick with a LB9 cam or something very similar.
