I know it has been said that they're different, but I really have to wonder why they would be! It makes sense to me that the ESC "filter" would be different, but it doesn't seem reasonable that they couldn't use the same sensor.

I'm just taking a WAG here, but it could be the 305 sensor is more sensitive than the 350's, due the sides of the 305's bore being further from the outside of the block.

Again, just a guess.

I can't believe that the 305 and 350 are constructed differently enough that they'd have to use a different sensor. Any difference in the "sound" of the knock could be compensated for by using a different ESC filter. Anyway, what I'm wondering is if I can use a knock sensor off some other SBC-powered vehicle. The junkyards have to be full of late model trucks and what-not that have these, and it would be one less thing that I'd have to buy. It is solid-state after all, it shouldn't really "wear out" over time. The one I pulled off my 305 TPI motor is really rusty, and I figured I'd start with something newer before putting the 350 in!

You know what else I'm wondering, could the IAT and CTS sensors be the same? They sure do LOOK completely identical, and they're both being used for about the same purpose..

I think they are the same, but when you go buy them, it'd probably be better to ask for both.

Well, time to put this topic to bed.
The 350 and 305 use different knock sensors.
The 350 use Delco # 213-90
The 305 use Delco # 213-89

To top it off, the ESC changes too.

The 350 uses an ESC100
the 305 uses an ESC 105

The control module for both cars is the same.

Cheers

Richard

Richard, what exactly is the ESC? I know it stands for electronic spark control, but where on the car is it? It's not on either the engine or the distributor is it? I'm doing a swap between a 305 and a 350 TPI so I figure I might as well change it if possible.

I believe that is the yellow box attached to the computer bracket behind the dash.

204/214 @.050 .420/.442
SLP headers and catback
A4 with 3.42 gears
Fully loaded and everything usually works.

The yellow box is for the VSS, the ESC on my car is mounted over on the driver side firewall by the mess of relays. Its black, square, kinda thin, has like 5 or 6 wires going to it.

If your concerned with sensativity of the Knock sensor just wrap it a couple of extra times with teflon tape and it will decrease the sensativity (or so the book on Chevrolet high performance TPI induction I just read claims.) I have not needed to try this as I run premium with Klotz octane booster to up gas to roughly 100 octane. And it smells so good when you pull up to a light and the exhaust breezes past your nose. Oh Yeah!!
