Finished 87 T/A cold air intake, got pics too

I know some of you guys might be interested in it. I took Jobryan26's idea and ran with it. That black pipe you see is mandrel bent aluminized pipe (from an exhaust shop). The reason I'm posting this is to guage response and interest. If there is enough interest, I'll write a tech article.

The pipe is a 3 1/2 inch aluminized pipe. It has the same outer diameter as the pvc that jobryan26 used, just bigger inside (plus it doesn't melt -- like I found out.)

It's not just for looks though (although it looks pretty sweet). That LOUD hissing sound is twice what it was (since Jobryan26's cold-air setup) and since the filter sits in the hole in the fender, the cold air is definitely there. The car pulls much harder and likes upper rpms a little more. It doesn't seem like its suffocating anymore.

The pipe work cost me 30 bucks at an exhaust shop and the filter cost me 37.95 plus shipping. Everything else on there is either already on there when you take it apart or real cheap at the local home improvement store. Any interest?

I won't be replying anymore tonight. Got sleep tonight and school tomorrow. I'll check back in tomorrow (hopefully) in 2nd period = 9 - 10.

Once again...

If I could suggest something. I did the basically the same thing (only SD so no MAF to worry about) but I continued down, punched a 3" hole thru the battery tray and mounted the K&N filter under the car. I talked with K&N and even though they don't warranty the filter as waterproof, they say JetSki racers use them all the time. And the K&N has saved many engines from water damage. Unless you are driving in extrememly flooded streets the filters shrugs water off. This way it's in the direct path of cold air. I had built a small shield between the fender and the inner plastic shield. This kept any water from splashing off the front of the tire (though water doesn't splash off the front of the tire much).
Just an idea.

If you conside what Rob is suggesting, and punch a hole in the bottom of the fender where the battery would be on TBI/4BBL cars, you ould also run a "Ram-air" setup from the bottom of the car. Somehow run it through the Ground FX.

I'll post a tech on here tonight. The k&n is part # dfm-9601C, and it'll be included in the faq. Rob P, I read your article and don't really like the idea of cutting (although I had to drill) into my unibody. Great idea and performance, but just not "safe" enough for me. Any more takers?

The pipe has no part #, it's a 90* bend from an exhaust shop that's been cut and welded to fit. I'll explain in the tech article.

I see exhaust shops are becoming popular now for CAI I did mine last year from regular 3" exhaust. Your right, there are some gains from it too. I shaved .2 off my E/T and have timeslips to prove it. Definatly a great mod. It would be even better if we cut the hole out like Rob mentioned.

I hear ya man. The reason I went PVC was i thought the PVC would stay cooler than aluminum or steel but mine fell out of the boot that connects to the TB and threw a code and when I got home the PVC was laying on the pulleys and melted holes in it with shavings all over my engine! I hooked up a temp intake since I'm redoing all of mine as we speak. An actual ram air sys.
Looks good tho.

Hey Jobryan26! Posted a LONG time back when I was trying to do your intake job and couldn't get a hold of you...but nice typing you. Yeah the pvc will melt. It doesn't really drip or lose plastic, it molds to the shape of the boot. Once it molds, vibration can take it out.

As far as temp intakes...I used plain old pvc (unpainted and unglued) for a day while my pipe was being fabricated.

I posted the article on the board under the title something like..."Cold Air Intake Tech Article"...it's a little further down the board.

You guys look over it and check me. I am definitely going to include your name in the credits Jobryan26. Thanks to your article, I had a lead and this was my first foray into improving the performance of my engine (I'm 17 and that "cheap" 70 - 80 bucks is hard to come by). Thanks again and PLEASE check my other post.

Just to add... i copied GM tech's cold air pretty close with the heat shield and everything, but cut a hole in the battery box, made a 3" turn down, and mounted the filter right behind the fog light so it is actually sucking nothing but cold air, no engine heat. all my exhaust tubing is also covered in heat shielding.

That's exactly what happened to mine but mine ran like that for about 1year before my problem.

Yesterday I stopped by Home Depot and bought two zero to ninety degree metal pipes, about 7 inches in diameter. The kind of pipe that is made of sheet metal rivoted together, and the sections slide around to change the angles of the pipe. I took the bottom piece off and cut it in half and opened it up, then duct taped it to the end of the pipe(yeah, duct tape.. lol). So basically it takes up the entire area behind the fog light and the entire area under the filter. I then bolted it back the way the old plastic pieces were bolted on, but from the bottom. I can't wait to try it out, there is some cutting required, only two half circles.

What do you guys think, compared to the CAI?
