Re: TPI MAP or MAF

You have neither.....Those are used on TPI motors......GM used TPI motors on 85 and up.....Your car is carbed not fuel injected....Those items are used on fuel injected motors

On speed density setups you wont have a MAF sensor

On a MAF setup, the MAF is located between the air intake and the throttle body

Re: TPI MAP or MAF

From what I got out of that garbled message is that he just got a motor to replace his carbed motor but I may be wrong because the message borders on illegible, a bad combination of abbreviations and misspellings.

You cant miss a MAF, its a large black tubular sensor with wires going into it. It has screens(just like window screen) on each end. If it does'nt have that its probably a Speed Density motor. Do you know what year the motor is? That would answer your question as well.

Re: TPI MAP or MAF

Chances are that it is a MAF, if it came from a car that old. Speed density cars were made from 90 - 92. Do you have a place for a 9th injector? It is the cold start injector that was used on MAFs I believe.

I think it would be a MAF. I didnt see a MAP sensor on the plenum. If the TPI u got isnt a 90-92 it was a MAF, GM used speed density in 90-92.

Re: TPI MAP or MAF

It looks like a '85-86 TPI system to me. The lower intake appears to be made for the 90-degree angle center intake bolts used on '86 and older heads.

Re: TPI MAP or MAF

I'm not sure about the 86 model tpi computer, but I do know the 85 tpi ecm is different than the later years'. Unlike the newer versions, the 85 ecm has 2 connectors that plug directly into the computer rather than 3 and the MAF burn-off relay is piggy-backed on the ecm. Also the PROM (commonly referred to as the "chip") and MEMCAL (fuel calpak) are separate, while in the newer versions they have been combined into one chip. Check out your wiring harness and find out if it has 2 connectors for the ecm or 3 to determine what computer to buy.

Re: TPI MAP or MAF

The 86-89 ECM uses two connectors also. Its the 90-92 that uses three connectors to the ECM.
