What do I need to make my 305 sound like this?

http://videos.streetfire.net/video/8...dle_122404.htm

I really like the way that sounds, but I can't put a cam that big in with the stock heads.

The only heads I could find for a 305 are these:

http://www.jegs.com/i/World+Products...749777%7C10187

But the max lift is 560 and the xfi268 cam is 570. How can I get this cam in my motor?

Re: What do I need to make my 305 sound like this?

i would think thats abit much for a 305.
i think to get a good sounding engine would be get new exhaust and muffler. that would help get the sound you want. and get a a slightly bigger cam.
then it should sound pretty close i would think.
my 305 sounded almost like that. the muffler rusted away so the only muffler i had was the Cat. converter. it muffled the sound pretty good. wasnt to loud and not to quite. had a sweet throaty sound.
and just turn down the idle abit. make it sound pretty good at idle.

Re: What do I need to make my 305 sound like this?

These are the mods for my car slp cai, bbk under drive pullies, accel base, slp runners, ported upper intake, and world s/r heads for my 305. But for the life of me I can not decide on a cam. No amount of searching produces any results...

Is there a cam you would recommend?

XFI268
ZZ-409
LF74220

Will any of the above work or are they to big? I like the duration of the cams

Also will these cams run with out a tune? Plug and Play style. Or will they not even start with out a basic tune...

have you thought about using an LT4 hotcam in your 305? .525 lift with 1.6 rockers, 112LSA.

thats what I'm running.. heres what it sounded like un-tuned through a flowmaster; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11Ps7...eature=related

Re: What do I need to make my 305 sound like this?

My 305 sounded very similar to that, minus the lope in the cam. But I had stock manifolds/Y-pipe with no cat and 3 inch pipe back to flowmaster and dual 2 1/2 outs. Again, similar but without the lope. Currently in process of rebuilding 350 and getting headers. Can't wait to hear what she sounds like then!

this is the one I jammed into my 305; http://store.summitracing.com/partde...2&autoview=sku

As long as your 305 is a roller block, you should be good to go. I also did other mods, like aluminum L98 heads, exhaust, etc. check my vbGarage for all the details.

Re: What do I need to make my 305 sound like this?

Lt4 hotcam would rev really high on a stock 305. It will scream tho somewhat lopey on a 350, let alone a 305. Brisks car sounds goooood.

similar cams will idle just as well. comp's 502 cam is a 218/224, that may be your best bet for a nice cammed 305. Depends on how crazy you want to get with it. you could go bigger I wouldnt unless you get decent heads

powermax 2050 cam is a good too that zepher posted. sounds good

So do you think a XFI268 is a bad idea for a 305?

Re: What do I need to make my 305 sound like this?

not necessarily.. but it willl need a proper set of heads to handle the lift and lobe profile of that cam. Stiff springs for sure. Else you will have valve float problems.

Good flowing heads will help make the power that cam wants to make. It will peak on a 350 at near 5700 rpms or so... which means more like 6000 rpm on a 305, generally. You need a set of heads and the intake to support that rpm/airflow requirements

Like all cams, there is a purpose/setup for each grind of cam out there. Your suppose to cam the motor based on the motor specs, and the XFI isnt the best choice for a 305 with world heads i'm gonna say. Something like the new trickflow smaller runner/bore heads would be ok. Maybe even ported L98 aluminums. fully worked 081 Lb9 heads would work well to but they need alot of work. But the XFI series of cams are the new grind designed for the best cylinder head port profiles that flow alot of air at high lifts (.550-.600). thats why they have such aggressive lobes and high lifts.

Would it hurt the performance bad? If so is this the cam you are recommending?

I think this is the cam I will probably go with:

XR276HR-12

Re: What do I need to make my 305 sound like this?

yeah thats teh one i was leaning towards.. the other is a nice cam for a hot 305. There is a guy on this board who has that cam and that car rips pretty good. I'd only do that cam if you do alot of headwork to the castings you have in mind or possibly different heads, but i wouldnt sweat that too much. 218/224 is PLENTY for a 305

Re: What do I need to make my 305 sound like this?

hey, my car is one of the rare ones, I have no vids of the sound but it truly sounds different from the strange sound of the 350 tpi's and low power 305 tpi's... mine came stock with dual cats, the 350 cam which is the same as an lt1 cam, but i ran 3'' pipe from the cats all the way back into a 3'' y and out with 3'' lol, it sounds amazing, not SO much lope as most of those but you can tell its not the peanut cam the 305's got ... so, wut i recommend is, the lt1 cam or the 350tpi cam if you dont want to worry about tuning issues

Re: What do I need to make my 305 sound like this?

Ive got a l98 that i will be installing shortly in an 88 GTA. I would love for it to sound like the IROC that BRISK has. What exactly needs to be done to get that sound. What cam, heads, exhaust, chip etc. What is not needed in that short list I just mentioned to get that sound. Is it necessary to change exhaust? Thanks for your help.

Re: What do I need to make my 305 sound like this?

L98 with his cam would sound just as good Lt4 hotcam. Good exhaust will tone the sound too. Hell, run his setup too and it should sound identical

check my sig for my stock L98 with my exhaust. chambered tube with no cat. I think it sounds pretty cam like even for a stock cam L98. Mufflers can have a influence on your lope, thats for sure. My flowmaster never sounded like this

Re: What do I need to make my 305 sound like this?

Quick question, I have a 355TPI with TPIS runners,TPIS big mouth intake, all MSD ignition, headers, ported plenum, and an LT1 cam. It has stock L98 heads, but i recently got some vortec heads. I just wanted to know if I can use the XFI268 with these heads and not run into problems or do these heads suck? This is my ride http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2662904 its not much but I want that freaking lope man

Re: What do I need to make my 305 sound like this?

that cam is too much for vortecs. the Lift is way tooo high. i'd only run a cam around .500-.510 lift or so with vortecs

And with those heads, will need vortec TPI base manifold to work

Re: What do I need to make my 305 sound like this?

I think any cam will need head work and you shouldnt choose the cam based on if you need head work or not. Setup the valvetrain the right way its important. Only cams that would work are L98 cam, and Lt1 cams and they are not very impressive stock cams

Crane has a 214/220 cam with .465 lift that may work on vortecs with little work if any work at all. I think vortecs are only good to .450 but some say .470. I'd still get them built to handle .500 lift cams safely

good cam similar to the XFI268 would be the XE version, the 502 cam. its same duration at 218/224 but lift around .500. Good cam for vortecs. TPIS ZZ9 is also good at 212/226 or something like that. Good TPI grind
