85 MAF on 88 TPI?

Hi and thanks ahead of time on this but I am new to the tpi stuff, lol.
I am putting a TPI set up on my monte ss in a few months and I have been getting things here and there. I have a 88 trans am tpi (intake, plenium, rails, runners, and 305 injectors) and I just bought a 85 air intake that has the maf sensor on it. If the sensor is good, can I use it on this set up? I still have to get the wiring harness and ecm in the future and I would like to use this sensor but I have heard about the 85 ecm's and I wondered if it would work ok with a 89 ecm because I am looking at blocking off the 9th injector. Also I have a set of 081 heads that I was thinking of putting on the 305 ho ss motor to match the tpi set up, would they actually flow better than the stock heads I have now? I am going to switch out the motor to a 350 early next year and I am going to run the tpi to see how it runs before i decide which way to go with the motor build. I read that most of the later ss motor had center bolt valve covers but mine is perimeter for some reason, lol.

To be perfectly honest bro i would ditch the MAF and since you have not bought a harness or ECU yet,get speed density!!!!

Re: 85 MAF on 88 TPI?

Is there much to changing over to sd with the tpi I have? I read that sd was not as forgiving to changes in motor upgrades but I have seen more and more people changing over to sd. I am going to look to see if there is a write up on here or if someone could point me in the right direction, lol. I guess everyone has their preference on which way to go but sd sounded a lot easier to maintain but I wasn't sure that if I wanted to go 300 hp and over if it would be a problem.

stick with MAF. unless you only want SD to run one of those goofy air cleaners right off the TB.

Haha, that was the reason, but I have bought the air intake and it has the maf but I know that the 85's were a problem but I didn't know if the maf was the problem or the ecm. Here is the air intake I bought

Sorry to hear about the knock, doesn't sound good. I am not into tuning either that is why I have been doing a lot of reading on the subject and with all the cheap gas now days, lol.

Re: 85 MAF on 88 TPI?

The 1985 TPI MAF is a one-off item. It is a low frequency range, FM type MAF, and 1985 is the only year it applies. 1986-89 used an analog MAF, and the two types are incompatible.

How about a 85 wiring harness, will it work on 86 and up set up?
